Ivory objects from the chalcolithic fortification of Leceia (Oeiras)

Ivory constitutes a new introduced material, an innovation, whose starting point on the Iberian Peninsula coincides with the beginning of the Chalcolithic (around 3000 BC). As an exotic and in the Metal Ages on the Iberian Peninsula no more locally available material, it was from the beginning of archaeological investigation of special interest. So it was supposed to give clear hints on prehistoric contacts and exchange by sea.

Nowadays Portuguese children’s literature is making its way towards great innovation, experimentalism and quality, being side by side with the literature from abroad. Thus, it has resisted to a context of economic crisis and cultural disinvestment, in which the balance between the ethic and pedagogic dimension on the one hand, and the economic aspect on the other, is always weaker. We owe that to three different generations of writers and to well-reputed illustrators, who together dignify today’s literature for young children.

This paper examines an unusual case of interaction between literature and comics, which consists of re-appropriation of characters from comics to literary narratives. The characters are Bécassine and Corto Maltese and the literary narratives are three short short stories from La vie réelle des petites filles, by Chantal Thomas. We approach the intermedial migration of the two characters through the concept of transfictionality, created by Richard Saint-Gélais to refer to the sharing of fictional features – character being the central element in this process – by two or more texts (“text” here should be read in a broader sense including different media and modes). The study of the three short short stories allows us to identify form(s) and meaning(s) of literary re-appropriation of Bécassine, a founding character of the francophone comics, and her crossing with Corto Maltese in a book about the shaping of genre identity in stories about little girls but not for little girls.

HP Lovecraft created in his works atmospheres marked by terror, which have designed many of the ghosts that haunt the human mind. In this paper, we will analyse three works (At the Mountains of Madness, The Nameless City and The Shadow over Innsmouth), and we will try to understand the importance of representation of cities in ruins, how they become symbolic in the Lovecraft’s universe and how they are configured through the regards of the different narrators.

The heteromedial intertextual relations of literary nature, often based on the collision of antithetical elements, create a complex semantic universe. The power of this universe rises from a permanent game of similarities and contrasts which, in turn, emerge from within it: a dialogical net in which constant semiosic operations give birth to quotations and parodies. The aim of their operations is to subvert the strict univocality of every conventional logical chains, principles, and rules of the dominant culture that our society passively accepts. The combination of apparently incompatible elements - sacred and profane, popular and erudite, sublime and trivial–, their re-proposition or modification through complex intertextual practices, and the permanent oscillation between transcendence and immanence, lead to the destruction of the established hierarchy of values. Thus, Monteiro’s subversive act consists of dividing what is traditionally unite and bringing closer what is usually apart, so as to break down the restrictions of the cultural monolingualism and embrace the world’s polysemy.

The dynamics of coercion and fear in "Where are you going, where have you been?": a story by Joyce Carol Oates

“Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” (1966) is Joyce Carol Oates’s most celebrated and anthologized short story. The tense plot presents a young man, Arnold Friend, who tries to convince Connie Wyatt, a fifteen-year-old girl, to join him for a car ride. Connie declines, feeling there is something wrong with him. Thwarted by Connie’s repeated refusals and excuses, Friend becomes increasingly more threatening. The tense dialogue that occurs between both characters shows the power of coercion and the strategies it resorts to: (1) trickery, (2) manipulation, and (3) threat. At the same time, thanks to Connie, the reader becomes aware of the different responses to coercion. There is a well-structured crescendo that includes (1) anxiety, (2) fear, (3) panic and (4) submission. In this paper I intend to analyze (1) the dynamics of coercion and fear, (2) different strategies used in the process of coercion, (3) several responses to threat, (4) how they are represented in this story, to create suspense. To substantiate my nalysis, I resort to the studies of several specialists in the field of gothic literature, criminal psychology, and, naturally, to my own opinions.

The association between courtesy and package leaflets may seem far-fetched. Package leaflets that accompany pharmaceutical products constitute a subgenre of medical language and are part of a highly conventionalized text genre, the drafting of which follows precise indications concerning its macro and microstructure. Due to the implications for the health of the user, this technical discourse linked to pharmaceutical information is based on clarity and precision. However, these principles do not exclude courtesy. The forms of courtesy are inherent elements of this text genre, because of its multifunctional nature which can be observed in different acts of speech, such as instructions, advice or recommendations. This article contributes to the training of specialized translators in the field of Health Studies through the development of materials of support and authentic examples. We will present a diversified range of courtesy forms in German and Portuguese package leaflets and classify them using the tools of contrastive analysis.

In an era of the overwhelming presence of technological tools, no one renounces the help of PowerPoint in oral presentations these days. In general, the intelligent use of this program does not prevent the presenter from being dynamic and interactive. But in the educational arena, and in the particular case of our students’ oral presentations, we ask ourselves if we are not contributing to reducing their effort to articulate a well-structured and argumentative discourse. As a consequence, professors also find themselves with the difficulty of assessing these oral examinations that mix new technology with the existing procedures.

O estudo do conto em Portugal: do século XVII à atualidade

This study starts by presenting the main lines that accompanied the evolution of short story theory in general, with special attention on the thought of Edgar Allan Poe. Afterwards, it shows an overview of the theoretical and critical study of the short story in Portugal, which began in the seventeenth century with Corte na Aldeia, by Francisco Rodrigues Lobo, the first attempt to present a set of guidelines on the art of the short story and the novella. We can say that, in general, studies on the short story in Portugal show a direct or indirect influence of Poe’ ideas, whether through North American theorists or through Latin American scholars, all of whom discussed the aspects that characterize the short story as a narrative genre and as a reflection of modern and postmodern condition.

O "Definitivo Tédio" de Bloom em Uma viagem à Índia, de Gonçalo M. Tavares

In the present article we will deal with the subject of contemporary boredom and its presence in Gonçalo M. Tavares’ Uma Viagem à Índia, published at the end of 2010 and already considered one of the most prolific and important books in the beginning of the 21st century. Bloom, the main character of this unique travel to India, is someone who reveals an attitude of distrust and distance towards the world that surrounds him, bearing the weight of a profound feeling of boredom and a kind of tiredness which reflect the characteristic post-modern apathy, resignation and detachment. Thus, by analysing Bloom’s unique individual epic journey and by confronting his path with the contemporary man’s fractured indentity, we will try indentify marks of boredom in the 21st century and provide a insight into its unique features.

Visão e viagem do Oriente na Lusitânia Transformada

A journey to the East motivated vast and rich literature during the 16th century. However, if on one hand we wrote long descriptive pages of new places, people and customs, on the other literary texts often accentuated a dysphoric vision, pointing ambition and greed as motivations and corruption as a result of Portuguese maritime company. This vision lasted in the 17th and 18th centuries, with the publication of the Peregrinação and the História Trágico-Marítima, by Bernardes Gomes de Brito, but not earned place as a theme in fiction novelistic during Mannerism and Baroque periods. The big exception is the Lusitânia Transformada (1607), by Fernão Álvares do Oriente. In this work we intend to show the vision of the East in this novel pastoral journey and the reasons for the absence of this theme in fiction till the second half of the 18th century.

Embrenhei-me, assim, numa vivência arqueológica, sob a dupla aprendizagem científica e humana, tendo, neste aspecto, afeiçoado a minha maneira de estar.
