Translating memory: between the distributed object and the multidirectional memory

Alfred Gell’s idea of memory presented in his “Art and Agency”, which passes through the biography of the person (understood not only as human being, but also as the object of art itself), is put in dialogue with contemporary studies on cultural memory in order to debate the role of translation on the perpetuation of remembrance. Aleida Assmann’s media and memory concepts mediate all this work, bringing up the hypothesis that translation is a medium of memory. The translation is here studied in direct contact with life, bios, as part of the biographical construction of the person and the work of art, or, specifically, of literature, in order to reallocate it in the debates about cultural memory.

Inquiry Based Education in the Undergraduate Physics Education Course: An experience of the Pedagogical Residence of a Federal Public University

In this research, we looked for evidences of how the processes of research and reflection of the pedagogical practice mediated by tool for analysis of inquiry based education can contribute to the knowledge construction on the teaching of Physics. We consider the inquiry based teaching as an approach that allows learning Physics in high school based on students' scientific experience. From the methodological point of view, the research is considered collaborative since we took into consideration the formative commitment in the  development of the study. The data production was established by the means of a reflective report of a pedagogical activity developed by three residents Pedagogical Residency program.  In this activity, the residents planned an Inquiry Based Physics class for high school students, and using an analytical tool they could reflect to what extent the class taught was an inquiry based class. The reports analysis indicate that the residents understood the basic principles of the inquiry based teaching, as posing a problem that engages students in the process of scientific knowledge construction in the classroom, broadening their intellectual freedom. The results also indicate that to reach students´ engagement and active participation it is important to establish a dialogic interaction in the problem solving process. The analytical tool used by the residents, allowed not only the analysis of the expected students’ actions during an inquiry based activity, but also allowed  residents to analyze whether their class conduction promoted an inquiry based environment.

The game of three touch: an analysis of the structure of volleyball in Curitiba (1932-2015)

The present study seeks to reflect and analyze the processes that led to the struturation of competitions, institutions and associations parallel to the Federação Paranaense de Volleyball, and how these institutions influenced the development of the modality at the regional level. We work with qualitative, documental and descriptive methodology. Delimiting the year 1932, the year in which we find the first record of development of the modality in Paraná, until the year 2015. At the end we conclude that with the emergence of new institutions fomenting volleyball in the state, allied to partnerships between public authorities and private partnerships, it became possible to further improve new forms and strategies of organization and management of volleyball, which, in turn, led to a greater development of the modality at the regional level.

Foreword

It is with immense satisfaction that we introduce the opening issue of the INTERthesis Interdisciplinary International Journal, created with the aim of encouraging and contributing to the interdisciplinary discussion. In this first issue, we have included five articles which have an extremely wide-ranging subject matter .The article by Carlos Walter Porto Gonçalves argues the geopolitical question implied in the purported dichotomy between hunger and environment, analyzing the environmental - social consequences of the use of an agrarian and agricultural pattern incompatible with the populations' needs throughout several regions of the world, thus generating a contradiction between the increase of food production and the concomitant increase of hunger. Javier Bustamante Donas analyzes the educational parameters, which are essential for the conversion of the society of information into a society of knowledge, pondering that the lack of reflection upon the human dimensions of technology causes disarray that threatens its purposes of greatest reach. Marika Moisseeff examines the conjugal relationship and the autonomy, focusing the couple as an initiative experience, which is settled by the development of intimacy along their connubial life, taking into account the differentiation between the spouses and the learning of respect for each one's space. Paulo Henrique Battaglin Machado evaluates the impact of public policies on the society, by means of a methodology of life quality rates assessment, considering intraurban differentials, and analyzes the inequalities and inequities among regions in Curitiba, confronting the urban model and the city image. Finally, Salvador Giner highlights the importance of sociology in the study of the human condition, emphasizing its multidimensional characteristic and the need of a moral competence that searches the union between the rational intention and the human freedom evinced in the utopia. We hope these articles can expand the discussion of these relevant subject matters and that their reading can be very profitable for researchers of the several areas of knowledge. See you in our next edition, in December of the current year! Rafael Raffaelli - Editor

The volleyball and the participation of trans athletes: another point of view

The objective of this theoretical essay was to offer and debate a set of arguments that make possible the understanding of the participation of transgender people in Sport. As a source of inspiration, we look at the "letter", widely publicized on social networks, by former athlete Ana Paula Henkel. The letter reveals the opposite position of the former athlete to the participation of trans athlete Tifanny Abreu in the National Volleyball Superliga, thus highlighting the argumentative use in an eristic way, disregarding facts and concepts discussed and publicized in the sports and academic environment. In this sense, we may suspect that the thematic thematic has elicited debates limited to the biomedical discourse and disregarding the sociocultural context of this insertion of these athletes. Finally, it is important to emphasize the need for further research on the subject for careful monitoring of the limits and possibilities of trans participation in Sport.

Two worlds in dispute: the official sanitary regulation and the interaction between the domestic convention and the industrial convention in the milk production chain in Maranhão

This paper discusses the process of establishing a standard of sanitary quality on the chain of production of cow milk in the Imperatriz/MA region, analyzing the dispute between two different ways of production, represented by the dairy industry and by informal cheese producers (the so-called queijeiras). The analysis uses as reference the perspective of the Economics of Conventions, a theoretical approach that considers the quality of the products as a social construct and a central element for the coordination of the actors involved in the process of production and circulation of goods and services. From this perspective, we show the constitution of two quality conventions in the production chain, identified as an industrial-type convention and a domestic-type convention, highlighting the dispute for milk producers, but also indicating the possibility of establishing some kinds of commitments between these two conventions.

Protest at Sea: the Arctic Sunrise Case and the clarification of Coastal States Rights

Protests at sea are more and more a tool used by non-governmental organizations to put pressure on the coastal States to give up exploration and exploitation of oil in the Arctic. However, regardless of their good intentions or the brightness of the banners flying, those protests could configure a severe threat to coastal States sights, as well as a real danger to the environment. Having that in mind, it is of extreme importance to understand how coastal States could lawfully act in the face of a protest of this kind. One of the most critically important cases concerning these types of events occurred in 2013 when Greenpeace activists engaged in a protest at the Russian Oil Installations, the Prirazlomnaya, located on Russia´s continental shelf in the Pechora Sea, within Russia’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). This case resulted in relevant jurisprudence. In this article we will analyze the case and its importance to clarify the extent of Coastal State´s jurisdiction regarding a protest at sea that could interfere with exploration and exploitation activities.

Play and interact in the spaces of the children’s school

The book Play and interact in the spaces of the children's school, authored by Maria da Graça Souza Horn, elucidates, through theoretical and practical arguments, with different illustrations - which make up much of the book - the two axes proposed by the National Curricular Guidelines for Child education. Through the reading of the book, teachers can find possibilities for reflection and practical proposals for the pedagogical work in Early Childhood Education, especially regarding the organization of space and environment in order to broaden the play and interactions in the education of children.

Valuing the environment: from protection to environmental insurance

The objective of this article is to analyze how the valuation of environmental protection from the insurance market develops. From Zelizer and other authors who approach the market as a social construction, we recover the history of insurance in Brazil, understanding the process of establishing this market, identify the business justifications and how to receive environmental insurance through legislation, analyze the transformation of environmental risk in product, we identify the impasse between supply and demand and conclude with considerations on the narratives and morals of this market. The research is based on a documentary analysis and interviews. It is observed as the main evidence of the research that this market incorporates different values throughout the history of the insurers, which justify and legitimize their actions that now incorporate values linked to environmental protection when they start selling Environmental Insurance.

Translating Labor History for Television

This article considers the challenges and advantages of translating academic historical research into popular television formats. It traces key moments in the development of televised history programmes in Britain from the 1950s to the present and explores the impact of two signiicant recent shifts: the fragmentation of traditional academic expertise; and the empowerment of audiences. The article moves on to discuss how these and other shifts helped to shape the making of two major BBC history series on women’s labor, both presented and co-written by the author (Servants, 2012 and Shopgirls, 2014). This article is adapted from a keynote address by the author to the Worlds of Labor conference in Porto Alegre in 2018.Translating Labor History for Television

Translation and metaphysics: a case for fictional characters

If different translations of the same literary work have different syntaxes and semantics, how are they supposed to be about one and the same fictional character? In order to answer this question it’s necessary to (a) know what fictional characters are and (b) present reference conditions for them. Relying on Amie Thomasson’s (1999, 2003, 2007) and Saul Kripke’s (1980, 2013) works I argue that fictional characters are abstract artifacts whose reference is fixed by the baptism performed by an author; and that the identity of a fictional character is preserved due to the maintenance of the same chain of reference. Finally, I show how translators maintain the chain of reference initiated by the author of a given work and how consequently a fictional character remains the same abstract artifact throughout different translations.

Satisfaction of body image and its relationships with biological sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender schemas of self-concept in dancers: a systematic review

The concept of body image is based on a multidimensional construct, formed of representations about the size and appearance of the body. The objective was to systematically verify the literature studies that showed the relationship between body image satisfaction and sexual variables. The results showed that the area that studies the perception of body image in dancers has not yet perceived the importance of other dimensions such as gender identity, sexual orientation and self-concept gender schemes, which may have greater impact than just the biological sex criterion . Biological sex is still the main control variable in the comparison among studies among dancers, and there is an urgent need for other dimensions of identity to be incorporated in future studies, such as those cited above, to increase the capacity to explain human body satisfaction.

Ethical and aesthetic values of kung-fu: a systematic review

Kung Fu is an ancient Chinese martial art and world renowned for its principles of teaching ethics and aesthetics, standing out with a profound philosophical singularity poured into values. However, very little literature deals with these issues deeply. In this qualitative study a systematic review was carried out in order to identify the literature on ethical and aesthetic education through Kung-Fu. We found 36 articles and almost all approach ethics and aesthetics in a generic and abstract way. Only four were in Portuguese. Many cite ethics and aesthetics as historical philosophical aspects, but do not address these issues when they enter sports competitions.
