A new species of Fissimentum Cranston & Nolte, 1996 from the state of São Paulo, Brazil (Diptera: Chironomidae, Chironominae)

Fissimentum mendesi n. sp. is described and figured on the basis of males collected in light traps in two localities in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The new species is apparently closely related to F. desiccatum Cranston & Nolte, 1996 and F. guairense Pinho & Froehlich, 2011 by having a posterior projection of tergite IX, but can easily be distinguished from its congeners on the combination of a short, stout, evenly curved superior volsella and an antennal ratio of about 1.5. A revised key to the males of the genus is provided.

Experiment as a Stabilized Network: associations, negotiations and some implications for science education

This article aims to discuss a traditional theme in science education research: experimental activities. The recurring use of rationalist epistemologies is questioned, which privilege a hierarchical relationship between theory and experiment and forget that experimentation is an activity related to the intervention and manipulation of specific and artificially constructed realities. An approach is advocated here that focuses on the emerging controversies in dealing with the concrete and the different negotiations imposed by the process of creating and stabilizing experimental phenomena. Using the concepts of the Actor-Network Theory, this position is discussed based on the qualitative analysis of a case study: the construction of an experimental didactic apparatus by a Physics graduate, with the purpose of composing his Conclusion Work of Course. The analyzed data were obtained from written records made by the licensee himself, photographs of the construction of the experimental apparatus and by a structured interview conducted with him at the end of the entire process. The analysis highlighted the controversial situations caused by the construction process that the experimental apparatus and the negotiations carried out, showing that this process also consists of the creation and stabilization of phenomena and actors, whose identities are always (re) defined contingently. Thus, it is evident that, both in science and in science teaching, creating and maintaining a stable phenomenon is making it even more social and collective. Finally, some important implications for science education are discussed.

Reflection, propositions and dialogues with youth: pedagogical and curricular dynamics of Physical Education in high school

The work presents reflections on the daily school life of youths, their youth cultural practices in (dis) agreement with the educational projects of Physical Education, based on the qualitative-ethnographic research in secondary schools in Cuiabá-MT-Brazil. Teachers and "young students" participated in the study, which they adopted as research instruments: analysis of documentary sources, descriptive observations and semi-structured interviews. There are absences and presence of meanings of Physical Education classes with the discussion of (in) legitimacy in Secondary School and its "place" in the project of cultural formation of youths. It is suggested possibilities for (re) invention of contents and pedagogical practices that value the teaching of the corporal practices from the reading of the young body.

Long live mining class united! Against imperialist war!: the coal miners of Rio Grande do Sul and the war effort (1942-1945)

The coal area of Baixo Jacuí, in Rio Grande do Sul, is known as the cradle of the coal industry in Brazil. The beginning of this industry occurred in the second half of the nineteenth century, but its assertion within the Brazilian industrial context occurred during the period of the war effort when thousands of tons of ore were extracted from the subsoil of the two main mining locations of the time: Arroio dos Ratos and Butiá. This article tries to understand how the workers of the coal mines of the region were positioned in front of this conjuncture characterized by profits of one side and super exploitation by another one. Firstly, it is sought to discuss the way the war effort discourse has toured the region through different segments of the coal community, seeking to raise and legitimize the maximum effort of the mine workers. The following are the exploitation levels to which the miners were subjected in this context and some of their main demands and forms of resistance. Finally, the position of the class entity is observed before the pressure of the mining companies and of the mining category itself. For this article documents of the documentary funds “CADEM” and “Sindicatos”, both belonging to the collection of the Historical Archive of Mining, located in the city of Arroio dos Ratos.

Social Work and Scientific Research: A Vital Relationship for Professional Education

Professional education in social work entails interaction with many factors of daily life, and scientific research is a way tolearn about these factors. Based on this assumption, this study discusses the position of theoretical and practical scientific researchregarding professional education, presenting its inherent challenges and highlighting its importance in the teaching-learning process. Thediscussion is organized in a brief introduction, followed by a debate on the meaning of scientific research. The article reflects on theimportance of scientific research in the professional education of social workers and provides final considerations and reflections.Supported by a literature review and guided by the critical social theory, the study recognizes the relevance of the investigativedimension amidst the contradictions of the economic system and the cult of social and cultural stigmas. This dimension is crucial todeveloping a profession committed to the rupture of discriminatory analyzes and the construction of a humanly emancipated society.

Teaching representations of school Physical Education: singularities produced by the work projects

The present study tries to understand how a curriculum organized by work projects produces singular representations on Physical Education school in a teaching collective. We used the theory of social representations, to guide our interpretations in a qualitative meta-analysis, which enabled us to return to the study carried out at the public Education Network of Porto Alegre / RS. It was concluded that the singular representations of Physical Education in the specific context of the case studied were symbolically constructed in a counter-hegemonic way to the school culture.

Investigative teaching as an approach to study the photoelectric effect with high school students from a Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology

This study presents an analysis of a Physics class in which the photoelectric effect was the theme developed with high school students in the context of professional and technological education. Using a photoelectric relay, very common in public lighting systems, we conducted an investigative demonstration, recorded in audio and video, with a second-grade class of a technical course integrated to high school in a Federal Institute of Education. Our analysis was based on the interpretation of the discursive interactions that occurred during the lesson, having as epistemological basis authors of science education anchored in the sociocultural matrix. The results show us how the research perspective of teaching can enhance not only the conceptual dimension of learning, but also the procedural and attitudinal dimensions. In our analysis, the most obvious attitude was the collaborative work. In relation to the procedures, a prominence was observed regarding the elaboration and testing of hypotheses, as well as the realization of inferences. As for the concept, in the delimitations of each episode presented, we understand that we were able to establish the relationship between photoelectric effect, target material, wavelength and radiation energy.

Psychiatric reform and Brazilian dependence: between the archaic and the modern

This study carried out analysis of the Mental Health Policy, as part of the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform (BPR), based on theMarxist Dependence Theory (MDT). The objective is to understand the implications of BPR – related to the totality of the capitalistaccumulation process – regarding services and epidemiology. A historical-descriptive perspective was adopted to approach the data onmental health in the city of São Paulo between 2008 and 2017, promoting a qualitative analysis through historical and dialecticalmaterialism. The analysis demonstrates that the BPR is incomplete and hybridizes with different perspectives on health, which wasverified by the permanence of asylum characteristics (the archaic) together with substitutive services (the modern). The study explainsthe contradiction between dependence and the constitution of social policy in a large city of a developing country.

Distance Learning and Social Workers’ Professional Education: Elements for Debate

The purpose of this article is to analyze the extent to which distance social work training is based on or distant from theprinciples of the ABEPSS curriculum guidelines of 1996. We set out to analyze educational policy based on the framework we haveadopted, distance education policy in Brazil, characterized by excessive commercialization and a discourse of democratization thateschews the precariousness of teaching, and does not expose or criticize the workers or students who work and study in this modality, that “motivates” the subjects to act in this modality is the material reproduction of the daily life. We have verified that distanceeducation has been operationalized as mass education. Standardization and technology as the main mediator subjects workers toalienation at work. This is a determinant of the formative process in this modality. Other characteristics raised were the superficialityof the apostilled material, which does not contemplate the theoretical - methodological rigor advocated by ABEPSS guidelines and theinexistence of the tripod research - teaching and extension.

Politics, public sphere and new ethnicities

The miscegenation discourse, in which the image of a tolerant nation is consolidated- the nation capable of assimilating all demands for recognition of peculiarities and cultural differences – prevailed during several decades as an hegemonic way of self representation of Brazil. However, recently, a variety of social actors (descendants of refugee slaves – quilombolas - , Unified Black Movement, indigenous organizations) have been questioning such a discourse, denouncing the historical injustices and the increasing prejudice they have been victims of. The relationship among these actors and the politics and the national public space is ambivalent. On one hand, they depend on the domestic politics as a context for the articulation of their differences and for the fight for the concretizing of their demands. On the other hand, the construction of their protest identity implies denouncing the nation that has conceded them a subordinated place and in searching transnational alliances which support their initiatives. The paper discusses, in a general way, such movements, going deeper in the studies of the new mobilizations of Afrob-Brazilians. It be showed how some political achievments (implementation of compensatory policies, cultural recognition) can only be properly understood when you take into account the relation of interdependence between the insertion of such actors in the national public space and their links to transnational political networks.

Social work and ongoing training: possibilities of overcoming alienating routines

This article presents the importance of ongoing training for social workers as a possibility of contributing to professionalwork from a critical perspective and affirmation of a specific ethical-political project. The study discusses education in class society andthe meaning of ongoing education in a counter-hegemonic direction to the interests of capital, presenting a reflection on the education’srole in an emancipatory way. The article resumes the principles of the Ongoing Education Policy of the Federal Council of Social Work(CFESS) of Regional Councils of Social Service (CRESS) (2012). Also, it points out the challenges and opportunities in the implementationof this policy and construction of democratic spaces of graduate qualifications, emphasizing the importance of ongoing trainingregarding two aspects. The first is the necessary suspension of the life routine, so one can contribute to the daily life, when returning, through actions aligned with a professional political, ethical project. Second, the potential for ongoing training as a strategy to maintainthe hegemony of a professional and education project.

The relevance of research for Social Work: Permanent achievements and challenges of Curriculum Guidelines

This article offers subsidies to support the dialogue regarding research about the social workers’ academic education, basedon the document Diretrizes Gerais para o Curso de Serviço Social (1996) (General Guidelines for Social Work Programs). A qualitativebibliographic and documentary research was conducted to analyze the laws that regulate the profession regarding research and otherrelevant scientific productions, from the perspective of historical-dialectical materialism. The results show that, given the currentchallenges related to the expansion of counter-hegemonic currents in social work and the expansion of Distance Education, theprofession needs to resume the agenda of researching the profession of social work itself. Thus, the analysis encourages the communityof researchers in the field to consider social work as an object of study. Finally, the article suggests the development of new research onthe implementation of the curriculum guidelines, for example, as a way to instigate a national debate on the subject.

Accelerators and particle detectors in high school: a sequence of teaching-learning

This article presents a proposal for a teaching and learning sequence on Accelerators and Particle Detectors (ADP), based on the discussion on the insertion of Modern and Contemporary Physics (MCP) topics in basic education. The proposal used the theoretical-methodological reference of Teaching Learning Sequences (TLS) supported by Design Based Research (DBR), which aims to build the sequence from a cyclic process that develops, applies and reconstructs sequences based on specific topics. After construction, the sequence was implemented in a federal public High School, in grade 12 classes. The information collected was analyzed considering the phases of the didactic structure (design protoprinciple) proposed in the referential of construction of this type of sequence, allowing it to be evaluated and redesigned it for a new implementation. In this analysis it was possible to find learning gaps and the need for systematization of knowledge, on the other hand appropriation of scientific knowledge by students, which is an indicator of the potentiality of the sequence.

Introducing copa-trad version 2.0 a parallel corpus-based system for translation research, teaching and practice

This paper describes COPA-TRAD Version 2.0, a parallel corpus-based system developed at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) for translation research, teaching and practice. COPA-TRAD enables the user to investigate the practices of professional translators by identifying translational patterns related to a particular element or linguistic pattern. In addition, the system allows for the comparison between human translation and automatic translation provided by three well-known machine translation systems available on the Internet (Google Translate, Microsoft Translator and Yandex). Currently, COPA-TRAD incorporates five subcorpora (Children's Literature, Literary Texts, Meta-Discourse in Translation, Subtitles and Legal Texts) and provides the following tools: parallel concordancer, monolingual concordancer, wordlist and a DIY Tool that enables the user to create his own parallel disposable corpus. The system also provides a POS-tagging tool interface to analyze and classify the parts of speech of a text.

International law under far-right governments: a comparison between the administrations of Donald Trump and Bolsonaro

Far-right parties and candidates have been gaining ground all over the world in the last decade. The election of Donald Trump as the president of the still most powerful country in the world was a milestone in this process. More recently in Brazil, the election of Bolsonaro confirmed this tendency. In this context, one of the areas that is in constant jeopardy is the international law. Therefore, this paper analyzes the impacts that far-right governments have on this field of law. By studying the related foreign policy measures adopted by Trump’s and Bolsonaro’s governments, it is possible to learn the dimension of the threat that international law faces when this type of regime takes place. As one of the conclusions, we learn that far-right governments tend to be self-centered in terms of foreign policy and not prone to cooperation in the international level and this frequently leads to the violation of international law, which can have grave consequences.

Comprehensibility and Brazilians' perceptions on pronunciation instruction

The present study aimed at investigating students’ perceptions about the study of pronunciation and the comprehensibility of their speech. Twenty-four English-speaking Brazilians at the advanced level or higher had audio recordings of their sentences judged by four English speakers from different nationalities representing the three circles in Kachru’s World Englishes Model (1985). Comprehensibility, accentedness, number of mispronunciations at the segmental level (such as palatalization, voicing, devoicing, epenthesis), native language of the judge, and perceptions about the study of pronunciation were tabulated and compared quantitatively and qualitatively. Results indicated positive correlations among better compreensibility, less accentedness and fewer mispronunciations at the segmental level; and, between comprehensibility and the desire for specific knowledge regarding pronunciation.
