Definition of optimal ages for transfer of seedlings of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze (Araucariaceae) according to their quality and volume of containers

The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality and development of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze seedlings, considering different ages and their growth in different size tube, aiming to determine the optimal age for transfer of nursery seedlings. Three volumes of tubes (50, 100 and 200 cm³) were used and four transfer ages (90, 120, 150 and 180 days) were tested. The study was conducted using a completely randomized design with 3 x 2, factorial arrangement of treatments, five replications per treatment and a total of 2,400 plants. The evaluations were performed monthly, using five seedlings of each repetition and randomly selected. The following variables were determined on each occasion: height, stem diameter, root dry mass, aerial dry mass, number of secondary roots and Dickson quality index. Only the variables height, aerial dry mass and number of secondary roots showed significant differences between treatments. The ages found to be optimal for the transfer of the araucaria seedlings were 120 days when in a 50-cm³ tubes and 150 days when in 100-cm³ tubes. For seedling maintenance in nurseries for periods longer than 150 days, the use of 200-cm³ tubes was found more appropriate.

“There are No Black Rebels”: rethinking E. P. Thompson’s Legacy for the American Civil War

The article addresses the loyalty of slaves to the Union during the American Civil War going beyond two usual statements, either "Lincoln freed the slaves" or "the slaves were freed." In doing so, it discusses how the abolition of slavery was a result of the interaction of two powerful actors, the Republican Party and its leader the US president and the slaves themselves, who claimed to be free by migrating to the Union lines. In a dialogue with E. P. Thompson, the article draws attention to the significance to plebeians and workers of the exclusion of institutional politics and the importance of political history also for black Americans.

History of sport in Mozambique: una visión de los profesionales de la Educación Física

We propose with this work to present the historical evolution of the structure of sport in Mozambique. For this, three teachers and four leaders who lived the history and evolution of Physical Education (PE) and sports in the country were selected. We use historical documents and semi-structured interviews with the participants. The content analysis was used to analyze and interpret the found materials and interviews. The socio-cultural context of FF and sport in Mozambique was marked by two historical periods: the colonial era (1927-1974), which laid the foundations for the structuring of existing FGs in Mozambique and the post-independence era (1975- 2016), which is characterized by regulation, the formulation of policies and the training of PE and sports professionals oriented to promote the area. In this process, despite the precarious social and economic conditions experienced in the colonial period and after independence, the Mozambican government played a mediating role that contributed to the development of the area.

The carnation revolution and workers' control

In this article we argue that the fundamental feature of the 1974/75 Portuguese revolution is the sociological struggle of social classes within companies and, above all, in large industrial units. We argue, in the context of a literature review, that this dispute should be defined as workers' control, distinguishing it from its opposite - production control, that is, state-national control - or from forms of co-management or self-management, which often appear mixed.

A place in the literary field: Marvel Moreno as the “reserved writer”

This article looks into the authorial figure of Colombian writer Marvel Moreno which is constructed around her inadequacy in the literary canon of the Colombian Caribbean and Latin America. This marginalization is rooted in the fact that she was a female writer in a male and masculinist dominated field. This position plays a double edge sword as it gives her own place in the field, but at the same time it excludes her from it to such an extent that she becomes invisible. First, we analyze the voices within her texts, which are related to her posture in the literary field. Then we focus on some critical texts about the author and her work to discern if her image corresponds to certain female figures of the writer’s imaginary such as: Judith Shakespeare, the ‘poète maudit’ or cursed poet, the little sister, and so on. Finally, we will see if the inclusion of a woman writer as Marvel Moreno in the Colombian literary field still is a problem nowadays.

Production of Senses about Integrality in Health Care for Trans People*

The article discusses the production of meanings around integrality in trans-specific health care, based on the experiences of users, doctors, and officials of the Municipal Health Secretariat, linked to a service for trans* people, existing in a capital city in southern Brazil. The results show an understanding of the comprehensiveness that, in addition to the breadth and complexity of the care and the ways of caring, is specified in the relational dimension or of the links between doctors and users, challenging to institute care in health as a space for negotiation, with co-participation and symmetry as its main attributes. The proposed analytical perspective aims to assist in the construction of counter-hegemonic assumptions, from which (re)signify the ways of caring by promoting the exercise of trans-citizenship.

Technological appropriation in teacher formation: between learning and connecting

This article aims to analyze the relationships that the students of a Licenciatura course in Pedagogy (beginners in 2015, distance modality - EaD) establish with the digital technologies and in what form this appropriation influences in their formation. This is a qualitative research and for data collection we used an online questionnaire, which was answered by 133 students of the course. The data revealed that the relations established with the technologies influenced in its formative process, since the EaD is a new culture and demands the establishment of relations with colleagues, contents, methodologies of teaching and evaluation, with specific changes in their contexts and processes, indicating new relationships mediated by digital technologies in teacher education. In addition, it was evidenced that public policies need to contemplate these new ways of building knowledge, of being in relation with the other and with the world, also offering conditions for technological appropriation.

Political representation and participation: reflection on the democratic deficit

This article analyzes the institution of political representation seeking to identify the limits and possibilities that it offers to deepening democracy. Based on a reconstruction of the political debate of the late 18th century, which introduced the representative principle as a key tool for modern democracies, the text raises the principal arguments for and against representation and analyzes the origins of the institute. It then contextualizes the debate in contemporary societies by discussing central factors that permeate the quality of representation, such as the ties to and control of representatives, the role of public deliberation and the relationship with the mechanisms of direct and semidirect democracy. The article concludes that the democratic deficit, based on the close application of political representation, can be remedied with the combination of participative tools, such as the plebiscites, referendums, popular legislative initiatives, public policy management councils and participative budget processes.

The misconception as a black death, or how to "naturalize" racialized bullets

The presented article intends to accomplish an initial reflection about genocide of the black population with focus on what we will call “murder by misconception”. Vargas (2010) and Almeida (2015) who generally work with the United Nations (UN) conception that places genocide as the physical and/or cultural destruction of part or all of an ethnic group/racial support the concept of genocide in this text. The murders we are dealing with are black residents of Rio de Janeiro and the metropolitan region murdered by "mistake" by state agents. The collection of these cases occurred by electronic media. We work with reports scope to draw a discussion between State Violence Racism and the “naturalization” of genocide. Finally, we realize that the murders by “misconception” has become a crescent and has demonstrated the “naturalization” of the black death justified by the criminalization of this population.

Travel writing cross-mediality: from blogs to artifical intelligence

This article addresses the genre of contemporary travel writing and discusses its cross-mediation in various digital forms: blogs, apps and the ultimate case where it is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) to actually produce the narrative. After providing some preliminary remarks on the difficulty to find a proper definition of travel writing, the article proposes to consider it not only as a genre, but also as a praxis. This open the way to a discussion that addresses the pragmatic effects that this kind of writing bears, suggesting that the more technology takes control over travelling and writing as social practices, the more these experiences are objectified and turned into acts. This is so, until it is an AI to be (put) in charge of the narrative of a journey: the experimental case of 1 the Road shows that the way in which AI textualizes its own experience resonates with the traditional form of hypomnemata providing food for thought about literary pleasure, authoriality and techno-self.

Gender and Performativity in Webcomics

The remediation from comics to webcomics and flash animated comics will be explained highlighting the audiovisual modes they share with electronic literature works. Besides emphasizing the changes in the reading, publishing and commercial processes, the main aim of this article is to compare gender roles in characters of webcomics with the performativity and denaturalization theories by Judith Butler. In this study the author’s freedom to deal with controversial topics such as sexuality and gender is seen as a possibility of exploration of gender and queer issues which have not been taken into account in previous research. Four webcomics about gender issues will be analysed emphasizing Judith Butler’s concepts: The Sisterhood story from SinFest (2008) by Tatsuya Ishida, Khaos Komix (2007-2012) by Tab Kimpton, YU+ME:dream (2004), I Was Kidnapped By Lesbian Pirates From Outer Space (2006-2011) by Megan Rose Gedris and The Gay Monsters (2007) by Andy Bauer. Representing different subjectivities in a popular genre as webcomic defies traditional social conventions and popularizes the individual’s acceptance of his or her own sexuality.

Liticteraturas: literatura além dos livros. O videolit
