Phonology; Language acquisition; Longitudinal study

The process of language acquisition presents a particular pattern in the establishment of linguistic areas common to all children. The data that we intend to present were collected through a longitudinal study of a child, monolingual speaker of Brazilian Portuguese, in the process of normal language acquisition. This monitoring was made through observation of linguistic performance, interaction through play activity and record the speech data of a child for one year. The beginning of the collection occurred when the child was 1 year and 6 months of age and ended at 2 years and 6 months. The entire collection was made aiming at spontaneous conversation, in which the dyad was composed by the child and the researcher or the child and a family member. Data were collected fortnightly, recorded and documented on tape sessions with about 30-60 minutes. Lexical items produced were transcribed phonetically, and observations of performance and interaction were recorded in field diaries. It has been achieved from this research, a detailed description of the linguistic performance of children and the aim was to contribute data on the lexical and phonological acquisition. The data showed a significant increase in inventory lexical and an aggregation of many phonemes in the phonological system of children in the study period, which can be corroborated with the findings of other studies.

L2 Acquisition; Interdental fricative; Connectionist Optimality Theory

In this paper English interdental fricative acquisition by Brazilians second language learners has been investigated. Data from oral productions of three students groups has been gathered. The first group is composed by sixth semester undergraduate students of an English course, the second and third groups are composed by third and tenth semester students. First, a phonetic transcription of selected words that contained interdental fricatives has been performed. Then, an analysis based on Connectionist Optimality Theory has been carried out. This analysis uses the reranking of constraints, and it reveals that Brazilians second language learners are prone to make substitutions of the segment /θ/ by the segment [t] as well as the substitutions of the segment /ð/ by the segment [d]. Furthermore, there is a strong impact of the Lexical Frequency on the learners productions.

www.eu.blog.com/tu: Blogs and the subjectivity construction through the writting

The intend of this paper is to investigate how the subjective writing present in the blogs can be classified and if blogs belongs to the diary’s genre, in accordance with most of definitions found. To reach a conclusion, we covered the following stages: a search for a definition on blog; the comprehension of the enunciative writing; a revelation of the subjective marks in the blogs; the character of the ‘You’ in the formation of the ‘I’ in the blog; and, at last, the study of the Mulher de Sardas blog as an example of the dialogue of I-You/It present in this fascinating instrument proportioned by the digital technology. The search happens under the lights of the Linguistic of Enunciation of Benveniste and under considerations about the Autobiographical Pact of Lejeune.

Exploring an interface between writing and consciousness

This study aims to reflect on the relationship between writing and consciousness. The theme is mainly about objects that move through Linguistics and Psychology areas. At this threshold, Psycholinguistics emerges, which is an autonomous discipline that, at first moment, constitutes itself as an interdisciplinary research area by comprehending aspects from both sciences. In an external interface, writing and consciousness are taken as objects that concern Linguistics and Psychology respectively. In an internal interface, we can study them under the perspectives of Psycholinguistic or Cognitive Psychology. Writing, under the Psycholinguistic view can embrace cognitive processes that operate in the writers’ brain as well as the product that results from the direct action of an agent. Consciousness contemplates a variety of definitions. We adopt the concept of consciousness as the knowledge that people have of their mental objects, whether they are perceptions, images or feelings. In this way, we try to analyze the nature of writing and consciousness, because we presuppose that they consist in cognitive processes that perform mutual influence.

Landscape representations in El Sur, by Jorge Luis Borges

Landscape representations depict spaces, according to human memory and perspective. The notion of landscape has a strong cultural meaning: it generates identities. It can be verified that this representation of the construction of an identity, in the story El Sur, of Jorge Luis Borges, takes place in an ambiguous and contrasting space.

I let the world pinker – one analysis of evaluative instances

The advertisement is a discourse genre that integrates visual and linguistic strategies, aiming at persuading an idealized target audience. For this reason, it has appropriate elements for analysis, both linguistic and critical. In this sense, the present study has the objective to examine the verbal and nonverbal elements in the advertisement Eu deixo o mundo mais pink (Revista Capricho, nov./2009). In order to study the visual aspects, we based on concepts of multimodality of Kress and van Leeuwen (1996) and, through these concepts, we consider the layout, the disposition of images, what is being portrayed and what colors stand out. We also aim to identify the attitudinal evaluations in the verbal text and in the construction of the meaning of advertisement as a whole. We used the theoretical principles of Systemic Functional Grammar of Halliday and especially the Appraisal Theory (MARTIN and WHITE, 2005). It was possible to find at this moment two evaluative stances in the corpus: (1) at the level of verbal text, the judgment for social esteem is highlighted; (2) the values of appraisal predominate in confronting the verbal text to the layout structure of advertisement.

The knowledge and construction of identities in school: a discursive analysis from the chronicle "The great against the small ones", by Rubem Alves

The work aims at a discursive analysis on how the construction of the subject-student identity occurs from the truth games that the school institution appropriates in order to "docilize" it. To do so, we use the chronicle "Big vs. Small" by the author Rubem Alves, in order to illustrate this process of docilization and subjectivation of individuals into "students". For the analysis, we rely mainly on the Discourse Analysis of French line, mainly in the theorizations of the scholars Pêcheux and Foucault.

Indirect anaphora and meaning production in compositions of Basic Education

This paper deals with reference process, specially the one that is constituted implicitly, made of indirect anaphors in compositions of students from Basic Education. Based on studies from the field of Textual Linguistics, as Mondada e Dubois (2003), Koch (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006), Marcuschi (2003, 2005, 2007) e Schwarz (2007) do, we aim to analyze the contribution of indirect anaphors to build meaning. The corpus of this work is composed of thirty-five compositions from students at the eighth grade (nine year nowadays) to analyze this process. Considering the analyzed data, the writers of the texts make use of implicitly references, taking the reader/listener to process meaning.

The processes of neuronal and recycling under the bias of implicit learning: literacy methods in focus

Based on advances in neuroscience and literature resulting from these advances, this text reflects on the acquisition of writing, specifically on methods of phonetic and global literacy, under the scope of implicit and explicit learning, in the acquisition of human language, essentially complex and arbitrary. This process will occur through the recuperation of the notion of connectionist learning and understanding of implicit and explicit. This theoretical recuperation arisen from discoveries of neuroscience enables better understanding of the elaboration of the famous discussion of the methods of alfabetization: phonetic method versus global method (or method of the complete word).

Argumentation in religious prayers

This paper seeks to analyze the argumentation in religious prayers of knowledge made available by the Theory of Semantic Blocks, developed by Ducrot and Carel. Such an argument seems to be precious because of the man's submission to God that appears in the prayers analyzed and can therefore be so well seen from the language itself, from the speaker's own way of referring to the interlocutor, regardless of context. Thus, once again it is proved that the meaning emerges from the words used in certain argumentative threads.

The construction of meaning in the computer or the computer at all: what is it?

Abstract : This paper proposes to conduct a theoretical construct about the formation of meaning in texts in digital environments. In this way, it proposes the initial reflection presenting the esthesic involvement of the subject as the constitutor element of meaning in the digital environment. Another aspect that is presented as an initial hypothesis of sense in this context is the element paratextual. For an initial questioning, it started from a theoretical basis (Flusser, Johnson, Genette). The analysis of cases allowed realizing that the esthesic involvement of the subject with the text occurs differently in the digital print environment. Another factor in the construction of meaning in the digital environment is the location of the elements paratextuals from the linguistic point of the printed text and digital text. If in that they are viewed as accessories, they pass these to be constituted as textual elements. Finally, it attempts to indicate a path to think the computer to beyond the instrumental view of the tool.

Music, language, cognition and learning: psycholinguistic interfaces for literacy

The article has support in Psycholinguistics and their interfaces with the art (specifically music), language (especially foreign languages), cognition (notably the functioning of the brain and language awareness) and education (particularly the initial learning of reading and writing). This paper presents the theoretical basis about music, foreign language and linguistic awareness and it also exposes opportunities for linguistic exploration of songs in different languages, thus contributing to the development of reading and writing in literacy classes.

The act of reading and teacher training in distance education

Courses that turn out graduates via Distance Education contemporaneously tend to require greater proficiency in reading for students, given that the interaction processes of mediation in the appropriation of knowledge of written language is prevalent. It is therefore a process focused on the reader, because content and procedures need to be read. This article focuses on some implications of this training process guided by the written language and therefore the act of reading, for which it is essential that students be proficient in reading comprehension in several genres, so that they can construct meaning of the contents read, appropriating concepts and methods that enable them to act in a consistent manner in the profession. This discussion assumes greater importance as institutional indicators (Pisa, Inaf) show that Brazil has not consolidated a tradition in shaping readers of more elaborate texts, signaling for a student not accustomed to more complex reading material, which require greater abstraction. The formation of this reader, in our understanding, demands consideration that the appropriation of the written language is a cultural process, such states Gee (2004), and appears to have expressive implications in the appropriation of knowledge through a process of Distance Education prevalently anchored in reading.
