Body, destruction and potency in White out, black in
This article discusses two stress fields. The first one regards the place of the body in philosophy from the dialogue with Nietzsche and Foucault. The second one comprehend the field of cinema, in which we propose a dialogue with White out, black in (2014), by Adirley Queirós, a film that shuffles bodies marked by police violence and that finds in the devices of science fiction a line of flight against the refuge of history. Between these two fields in dialogue – the thought of philosophy on the concept of body and the cinematographic work as artifice and strategy to documentary reports on resistance and fabling of the characters –, relations between memory and fiction, true and false arise

Academic suite: poetic notes for the elaboration of research projects in Communication
Research Methodology is compulsory within the stricto sensu graduate programs in Communication. Although reference works are of good quality, they limit themselves to discuss the process of the elaboration of research projects, with emphasis on its step- -by-step. However, you do not stimulate the researcher’s expansion of the meanings, as if sensibility were harmful to the scientific method. The present “text” was written for the Research Seminars of the ESPM Graduated Programme in Communication, with a focus on the pathos, in this way it aims at bringing the students near to the essential knowledge necessary to “make science”, entirely imprisoned in the logos. At each lecture, a “lyric extract” was distributed, on one of the items of the research projects

Against the abstract critique. Rejoinder to Francisco Rüdiger
The text is a rejoinder to Francisco Rüdiger’s critique of the paper “A crítica da crítica essencialista da cibercultura” (Lemos, 2015). It reaffirms the central argument that the problem of technology critique is an essentialist view of the technique, and discusses the 3 issues indicated in the reply: 1. lack of academic references, 2. performative contradiction, and 3. uncritical endorsement. The work reveals the fragility of Rüdiger’s paper in not naming the interpretation errors of the main works used and in not being able to seriously analyze Latour’s (2012) theoretical proposal, presented with a counterpoint to the essentialist view of technology. The text refuses the listed issues and affirms the abstract aspect of the reply
Social apocalypse in contemporary Hollywood film
Films provide important insights into the psychological, socio-political, and ideological make-up of a society and culture. Reading film diagnostically allows one to gain insights into social problems and conflicts and to appraise the dominant socio-political problems and crises of the contemporary moment. This article engages Hollywood films that contain allegories of catastrophe within the context of the Bush-Cheney era. As I attempt to show, horror, fantasy and other popular film genres articulate fears of the present moment concerning the state and the military, ecological and social crisis, and other phenomena, and can thus provide critical images and provide experiences that raise questions about the existing society

Media, television journalism and education
Convergence causes reconfigurations in the production and consumption of information. Audiences tend to become increasingly participative, but the media still establishes the public agenda. The diffusion of knowledge in distinct devices and languages is a complex challenge to the educational system. Critical and creative interpretations of the media messages contribute to the expansion of knowledge concerning our social reality. This article proposes a reflection on the relevance of the incorporation of the theoretical and methodological dimensions of media literacy and televisual analysis in journalism education and school training for allowing understand the meaning of the audiovisual codes in the making and in the ressignification of media discourses
Exquisitely filmed in Altmanesque style and drawing on scenes from the films of Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, Boogie Nights continues to this day to be proclaimed an ultra hip and daring look at the so-called Golden Age of pornography set of the 1970s. In this essay I attempt to document what this film leaves out of the historical record, and to show how historical suppression dovetails with psychic repression. Instead of history we are presented with melodrama. Instead of a historical document, Boogie Nights gives us, again, Oedipus. Like most elegies, the negative or undesirable aspects of the subject are minimized or omitted, although they come back to haunt the text.
The other Pandora’s box

Is television capable of informing?

Harun Farocki: media operator
In this article, we present propositions about the processes of uncertainty and indeterminacy in mediatization contexts. The objective of this reflection is to develop a field of hypotheses for the analysis of media processes, in their relations with social processes, focusing on media dispositifs. Three hypotheses are presented according to specific epistemological perspectives: that which we categorize as activated by the sign; the second, by the systems of intelligibility; the third, the technological systems, in particular the digital ones. These relations – between logic and processes – are, in the conclusions, disposed in three hexagons, in which the hypotheses, situated as competitors and relational, suggest new prospects about the uncertainty and indeterminacy in mediatization scenarios.
A question of method: notes on sound and music analysis in films
To establish accurate methods that enable the rigorous study of the soundtrack in audiovisual products has been a recurring problem in film studies in Brazil. This essay critically examines manuals, books and articles from different areas of study, including Social Communication, Film Analysis and Sound Studies, in order to compile suggestions of methods of sound and music analysis in audiovisuals that may help future researchers.

The fragmented body of contemporary cinema
In The cinematic body, Steven Shaviro explores the relationship between the cinematic apparatus and the life of the body, suggesting that both are not alien or extrinsic to each other, since their symbolic and parasitic interpretation is part of the postmodern culture of social and technological relations of capitalist society. Understanding the cinema as a living medium that causes bodily reactions of desire and fear, pleasure and disgust, fascination and shame, the author seeks relations with postmodernity, the politics of human bodies, the construction of masculinity and the masochistic aesthetic, present in films.
