A presença do género Conus sp. foi identificada por um de nós (J.L.C.) nas colecções de Arqueologia do Museu do Instituto Geológico e Mineiro, na companhia do Amigo saudoso O. da Veiga Ferreira, a quem devemos as facilidades que permitiram o desenho dos materiais ora publicados. Trata-se de peças oriundas da gruta das Fontainhas (serra de Montejunto, Cadaval) e das grutas de Poço Velho (Cascais), utilizadas pelo homem pré-histórico, cujo presença e significado, até o presente, ainda não tinham sido devidamente valorizados, no âmbito das relações culturais e comerciais estabelecidas entre as populações estremenhas e o litoral algarvio e marroquino, apesar de tais materiais se encontrarem expostos ao público há mais de um século, no referido Museu.

The author discusses some of the religious buildings of peninsular Early Christianity located in the north of the ancient Roman province of Lusitania. He begins by discussing some terms that are often used, particularly paleocristianimo. He establishes a typology of monuments of this period, based on its geographic location and discusses, based on recent discoveries of this period, such as a basilica at the site of Prazo, in Numão, municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Coa, or the archeological relationship with the architecture as in Idanha-a-Velha, new interpretations of religious buildings and especially their chronologies. The author analyses the major basilicas located between Douro and Tagus, Conimbriga, Idanha-a-Velha, S. Pedro de Balsemão, Prazo and Viseu. He concludes with the proposed timelines for this new building and the increasing importance of studying the archeology of architecture.

Quanto se sabe, a epígrafe de Laveiras constitui, até ao momento, o único testemunho garantido da existência de um aquilifer – o portador da águia legionária, símbolo máximo do poder militar romano – em terras peninsulares.

The poetic theatre of Maurice Maeterlinck in its unique symbolist aesthetic develops a relationship between the word and the representation of the "tragic interior" found in the categories of silence, absence and of the invisible that contributed greatly to a new orientation at the end of the 19th century theatre. In strict line with the mimesis crisis and the realist illusion, the Maeterlinck theatre weaves a privileged dialogue with the Mallarmé Book project and with the equations between "drama", "mystery" and "music" present since its first theatrical acts. In that continuing line, the symbolist theatre of Maurice Maeterlinck, or in other words, the desecration of the transparent syntax and the rationality are necessary to understand the ontological complexity of modern man, as if to demonstrate what Mallarme advocated: the always new life of Literature, as overcoming nothing, as celebration of meaning.

Os monumentos são entidades com características próprias. Modificam-se com a idade, mostram as marcas do tempo e podem mesmo morrer, ou seja, deixar de ter valor dada a sua degradação avançada. É esta degradação que temos de evitar a todo o transe. Ganha enorme acuidade a taxa de decaimento dos monumentos, desde as pedras lavradas, aos vitrais, couros e papéis, que vem aumentando assustadoramente nos últimos decénios.  

 Though the novella introduced the vampire to the English literary world, The Vampyre (1819) by John Polidori has gone down in history as a lesser achievement when compared to that other monstrous creation, Frankenstein (1818), both presented as the result of a group competition among Lord Byron, the Shelleys and the former’s secretary, Polidori. With Las Piadosas/The Merciful Women (1998), Federico Andahazi pays an ironic tribute to The Vampyre and to Gothic literature in general. In Andahazi’s novel, the monster is an animal-woman of undefined species and elusive traits. Using gothic aesthetics in his own novel, Andahazi questions the literary universe from within on addressing issues such as female authorship and anxiety, the sexual politics of the literary industry, metaphoric male and female vampirism and their related social contexts, and female animalization as a symbol of the rejected form of feminine literary performance.

This essay explores how theater of the Black Arts Movement served as an important public forum in the American Civil Rights Movement. The dramatic representations of black and white identities proffered by Black Power dramatists challenged the validity of dominant ideology surrounding national identity primarily by subverting the tenets of American civil religion, and thereby demonstrating how myths surrounding national identity bind some together while causing violent ruptures between other kinds of Americans. However, dissenting stories of American national life and identity that characterized drama of the Black Arts movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s offered more than mere responses to the mainstream. Rather, plays that emerged out of the context of Black Power activism and philosophy provided audiences with new, alternative conceptions of American identity, with which black Americans, historically excluded from narratives of the national self, could identify and emulate.

The moral and integral education of Man privileges rhetoric, essential to oratory, the art of word. The era inaugurated by the dynasty of Avis shows a great interest in the education of citizens, inspired by the Florentine ―civic humanism‖. The openness to the Humanistic Movement and to new pedagogical methods faces some resistance from universities. It was especially in the court, and in the context of the royal patronage to the education of the poor, that the modern teaching of humaniores litterae became a practice in Portugal and Spain. The civil oratory, the civilizational strength of the word, the royal dominance, and the human action, the courteous ideal, and the Lusitanian adventure, the arms and the letters, reinforce the national identity in this golden age of the European royal court.

The allurement of travelling is timeless and is characterized by an unquenchable thirst for diversity and an attraction for all that the Other represents. From classical antiquity to our present day world, literature has thrived on this restlessness for roaming from place to place. In the end, travel literature has created and transmitted an image of the Other which is different from Him/Herself yet imbued with fascination and exoticism.

In Quatrocentos mil sestércios, Mário de Carvalho reconstructs the cultural historical and literary outlook of a Roman province in the Iberian Peninsula, which cross-refers to the second century BC. The narrative, when dialogues with the comedy of Plautus, with the Latin novels of Petronius and with Apuleius present a fictional world through parody and irony, which, although remote, allows a reflection and a criticism of institutions, of men and of the world today. Our analysis will focus, therefore, in the intertextual relationship with the classics, particularly among the episode's dinner in the village of Proclus in Mario de Carvalho, and Trimalchionis Scene in Petronius.

O Prof. Doutor Joaquim Fontes foi pioneiro da arqueologia oeirense ao ter realizado as primeiras sondagens arqueológicas no povoado pré-histórico de Leceia, actualmente uma das estações mais relevantes do ocidente peninsular. Conquanto tais trabalhos tivessem alcance limitado, já pelo curto tempo da sua realização, já pela metodologia utilizada, tiveram o mérito de voltar a chamar a atenção para uma estação então há muito esquecida. Perfazendo-se, em 2005, 50 anos sobre a publicação daquelas explorações, deveria tal efeméride ser convenientemente assinalada. Tal é o propósito, agora concretizado, com a divulgação do epistolário do ilustre arqueólogo e catedrático da Universidade de Lisboa, na parte que respeita à Pré-História e Arqueologia constituindo, também, um preito de homenagem à sua memória.

O monumento megalítico de Monte Serves, actualmente com o código nacional de sítio (CNS) S-4792, corresponde a pequeno sepulcro, até ao presente apenas muito brevemente referido na bibliografia. No entanto, a existência de um relatório ainda inédito, da autoria de um de nós (C. T. N.), dos trabalhos ali realizados e a identificação por outro de nós (J. L. C.) do original da planta então desenhada (do Arquivo de Octávio da Veiga Ferreira), bem como o evidente interesse do monumento, justificam o presente trabalho, no qual se apresentam observações inéditas obtidas no decurso da escavação, acompanhadas de breves comentários relativos à respectiva integração cultural no quadro do megalitismo da península de Lisboa.

Em Leceia, identificaram-se quatro fases culturais e cinco fases construtivas, com início no Neolítico Final e terminus no Calcolítico Pleno, coincidente, na sua parte final, com a eclosão do “fenómeno” campaniforme. Tal realidade encontra-se articulada directamente com a sequência estratigráfica observada.
