E-health: IT as enhancing mecanism for healcare development

Information Technology (IT) plays a substantial role in business innovation and progress nowadays. Aiming to improve its own management the healthcare sector has experienced, over the past decades, its own technological immersion. Considering that, this paper intends to establish a state of progress and deepen knowledge in the field of application and evolution of IT in the healthcare sector by defining the concept and coverage of e-health as well as identify possible barriers and strategies to progress. This paper results from an integrative review of the existing bibliography in the field of IT in healthcare and e-health, it’s implementation and worldwide future perspective but also to set a bridge to the Portuguese experience. Data collection was obtained through “B-ON”, “PROQUEST” and “ACADEMIA” databases and healthcare related organization’s websites as it is an example the World Health Organization. We verify that e-health is indeed at the center of worldwide agenda’s but there are still many significant barriers that compromise its efficiency requiring additional efforts from organizations such as WHO among others. In respect to the Portuguese health service, it is essential that constant investment and progression to implement new measures that ensure a more equal access to all the population is made in order to achieve a positive impact on their healthcare and consequent reduction of healthcare costs. Following that, it’s also important to investigate about potential conditioning factors for change and how to overcome that.

Quality of life of the elder people: comparative study of some determinants

Introduction: Successful aging is accompanied by quality of life and well-being. Quality of life covers four domains: physical, psychological, social relations and the environment. Lifetime is only of value if the quality of life is durable, and the goal of increasing lifespan is only achievable if the quality of life can be maintained. Objectives: To identify and describe, through sociodemographic data, the group of elderly people from the District of Castelo Branco (Portugal) and the Province of Burgos (Spain) and Understand whether the quality of life is similar between the two groups of elderly people. Methodology: quantitative study, non-probabilistic sampling type, accidental convenience method. The sample consisted of 200 elderly people, 100 residents in each municipality. For operationalization of the variables we used a questionnaire of sociodemographic characterization, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), WHOQOL-bref (World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrumente bref). Results / Conclusions: Both Boroughs have a predominance of females with a prevalence of married elderly people. The elderly in the Castelo Branco District (Portugal) showed a worse quality of life in the physical and social relations domains than the elderly in the Province of Burgos (Spain) despite the differences being not statistically significant. Elderly people with a higher level of education show higher quality of life in the physical domain and worse in social relationships. Married elderly men, pensioners, who are accompanied, who take less medication, who sleep for more hours tend to have a higher quality of life.

School pedagogy: social reproduction of failure versus requirements in management. A case study

The school institution's accountability in its various aspects should be given priority attention, taking into account the timely availability of reliable primary data. It is a question, in particular, of studying the correlations to be established with the success of students. In this article, which was based on an internal evaluation of a School Grouping in a municipality on the outskirts of the capital, both the lack of data and the difficulty of alignment regarding the main mission of the institution were highlighted. The production of data made it possible to combine internal knowledge and external validation from the perspective of development and improvement. The data were analyzed in their various aspects - year, cycle, class, discipline and exams - a procedure that is complemented with the analysis of students' success/failure crossed with family, socio-economic and technological factors, in order to understand to what extent, they interfere, or not, in students' school results. With regard to the problematization underlying the diagnostic process of success, it was possible to question the data on the widely accepted thesis of the school's reproduction of students' social conditions, formulated in the 60/70s of the 20th century by Pierre Bourdieu and his collaborators. The most salient correlation is sustained by the notion of internal causality and especially with the demands of the teaching staff in a classroom context.

Dyslexia alert signs: perception from students with dyslexia

Based on a survey of dyslexia warning signs - a concept that, as we propose, is different from dyslexia markers - undertaken by DISLEX-Associação Portuguesa de Dyslexia, adapted by us within the scope of this study and integrated in the form of a questionnaire, fifty-three students were asked from the first cycle to high school, already diagnosed with this Specific Learning Disorder, about the intensity and frequency with which they experience these difficulties. With a quantitative methodology and the use of a questionnaire, it was possible to find the signs that more students feel with more and less intensity and frequency by level of education and teaching and globally. Realizing what are the biggest difficulties felt by the interviewed students, we were able to propose what should be done by the school in order to minimize the impact of the disadvantage related to the individual factor dyslexia.

The interaction of students’ families with intellectual and developmental disability with the teachers/ school and their perspectives: relevance and

Knowing how the students’families with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) see the interaction between regular and special education teachers, and how they respond to their needs, adapt procedures, educational responses and support, always seeking to foster the growth and development of these students, was the central objective of updating this study. At the same time, IDD continues to assume recognized relevance and actuality both for the pressing and systematic need that students and their families need, or for the renewed challenges posed to the school, regarding the ways to interact and collaborate with them. Changes took place with the introduction of a new inclusive education regime that reinforces the parents' status by promoting a set of rights and duties that impose greater involvement of them. By the other side, the school is faced with the challenge of enhancing and making its real participation in the entire educational process. We believe that this interaction, will only be productive and generate success, if we see it as a shared process that belongs to a flexible organization, the school, and that we want to be inclusive. Through a qualitative study, we interviewed twenty families that are responsabilie for students with IDD, in the center of Portugal, more specifically in Viseu, Coimbra and Aveiro. From conclusions drawn from this study, and in general terms, we can say that the interaction of the two education professionals with the families revealed a contrast in terms of procedures and practices, although, less accentuated than the one found in the previous study.

Protagonism of young people with Down Syndrome to prevent SARS-CoV-2

COVID-19 disease is caused by the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. It has a variable clinic, from asymptomatic infections to severe respiratory conditions. People with Down Syndrome (DS) are a risk group for evolution with the severe form of COVID-19, because due to the genetic alteration of trisomy of chromosome 21, they may have immune system deficiency, heart disease, and anatomical changes in the respiratory system. Then, a COVID-19 prevention campaign was developed in a population with DS and intellectual disability, addressing the promotion of understanding the pandemic, the stimulation of new hygiene habits, the practice of physical exercises, healthy eating and the maintenance of mental health during social distance. It also points to the concept of self-determination, in which the population with DS is the protagonist of their own lives, encouraging these young people to make decisions and enjoy an environment in which they have social participation, to reduce the culture of exclusion in which they are submitted. Therefore, the insertion in the current scenario is proven. Structured in videos, an animation with general information about the pandemic and the others videos led by young people attending the Down Syndrome Foundation (FSD), focused on their inclusion, capacity, autonomy and empowerment. In these videos the importance of social distance and how to stay healthy during quarantine is addressed. The pioneering spirit of the COVID-19 prevention project for people with DS, who are the protagonists of the prevention campaign for their peers, obtained significant attention from the media. The goal of visibility for the Down population is reached, promoting their ability to social awareness.

Carlos Ghosn's people and quality management strategy at nissan: rise and fall

“I don't teach; I prefer to count”. We evoke Montaigne as a master/teacher who has enlightened Europe since the XVI century, he also a "son" of the dialogue between two cultures – the Portuguese, by the mother and the French by his father. Ghosn a "powerful" leader, by effort, but also a "son" of the difficulties that lead humans to emigrate. It was up to him to bring the Nissan back from the ashes. He knew success, by merit, but he also took all the blame for a globalization that he fought in a particular and innovative way, in our view. So even if the French unions, which fought him and the Japanese prosecutors who shot him down, have dubbed him the unscrupulous globalist, we will try to defend the reverse. We classify its management proposal by internal resources, as "interactionist and constructivist", translated into a project with a cross-cultural matrix, mobilizer of available forces (on the basis and in the technical structure or hierarchy) for business success, if a transformational leadership knows how to guide them from an autonomic and collaborative management. Against a certain return of soberanismo allegedly anti-globalist particularistic, Ghosn fought for a "glocation" powered by a networked organization, having applied this model to the "Alliance" between Renault and Nissan (a strategic partnership of federating matrix, designed by itself, to take advantage of synergies and preserve the identity of each). Those who shot him down, and those who supported such an action, may not have thought that turning him into a "scapegoat" withdraw the merit from Goshn, but his greatest victory would have been to prove the potential and effective way to structure the "networked organization".

Entrepreneurship and nursing: what reality?

The present study of integrative literature review aims to validate the scientific evidence on how entrepreneurship is carried out by nurses. This was considered a relevant topic, since being an entrepreneur is equivalent to innovative ideas that allow the identification of the need to create something new to fill gaps. Thus, in a world in constant renewal, nurses continually assess problems in terms of health and offers to respond to the real needs of communities, which leads them to ask: How can I do better? Nurses have a unique perspective on human behavior and health care perspectives, which can translate into innovation in the provision of care, filling existing gaps. In this sense, an integrative literature review was carried out, with research that included studies dating from 2015 to 2019, in English, using the electronic database platform "Web of Science" in the period from 01/05/2020 to 01/06/2020, using the following terms: entrepreneurship; entrepreneur; nursing. The textual corpus consisted of 10 articles, whose analysis reveals that being an entrepreneur nurse means to undertake, to assume responsibility and the risk of discovering or creating opportunities to use personal talents, skills and energy, using a planning process to transfer this opportunity to a service or product. It is important to emphasize that taking risks is a fundamental aspect of entrepreneurship, since, as studies show, being an entrepreneur nurse, in most cases, is equivalent to starting your own business and being an independent worker. However, the term should not be limited to employment status, as entrepreneurship has to do with the spirit of imagination and creativity, and the courage to develop new ideas. An entrepreneurial nurse is autonomous, directly responsible to the client, to whom or on behalf of whom he provides nursing services.

Diabetic foot prevention: integrative literature review

Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic, complex and long-term disabling disease. For intervention with patients to be more effective, health professionals must have a support of theoretical knowledge and develop skills for better performance in terms of health education, surveillance, diagnosis and treatment. Despite greater investment in this area, diagnosis, therapy and prevention of diabetes complications are problems that remain in the daily practice of health professionals. This review aims to identify the preventive measures for one of the most frequent and devastating complications of this disease: the diabetic foot. An integrative literature review was carried out on studies addressing the issue of prevention of diabetic foot, research was carried out on PubMed, B-On, Web of Science and SCIELO of studies published between January 2014 and June 2020, evaluated according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria previously established. The review corpus consisted of 7 articles. The analysis of the included articles indicates that all are consensual regarding health interventions in the prevention of diabetic foot, all focused the importance of education for diabetic patients, regardless of their age group, giving priority to self-care teaching. The diabetic foot is a serious health problem in patients with Diabetes Mellitus. Based on the results obtained, it can be inferred that the prevention of diabetic foot is an indispensable tool in nursing interventions, highlighting health education in order to enable the person to manage the disease, symptoms and prevent complications.

Characteristics of drug consumption among high school students

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of drug use severity among high school students. This is a descriptive, exploratory study, with a quantitative approach which had the participation of 933 students from four different high schools in a municipality from the Northern Region of Ceará state. We used the questionnaire for screening the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other substances (ASSIST-WHO) for data collection. The data were stored in the Microsoft Excel version 2016 program and, to assess possible associations between the categories, we used Chi-square tests. We observed that, out of the nine classes of drugs, the most used were: alcoholic beverages, marijuana, and tobacco, followed by inhalants and cocaine/crack. The prevalence of severity in the schools with the indication for brief intervention for alcoholic beverages was as follows: A (23.5%), B (12.4%), C (13.4%), and D (15.4%). As for marijuana, we have: A (14.6%), B (3%), C (7.1%), and D (6.7%). In this scenario, school A presents a concern in relation to the others because it presents greater severity for alcohol and marijuana, with the need for a brief intervention. We perceive that studies that understand the context in which students are inserted are essential and that interventional actions do not focus on drugs themselves, but on adolescents and their needs, which becomes a central challenge for articulated intersectoral policies for health and education, alongside the family.

Feeling safe and loved at school: gentle teaching in educational context

Gentle Teaching is a unique relational approach, centred on building safe and engaging relationships. Since its creation by McGee, in the 1980s, it has been implemented, especially, with people in vulnerable or disadvantaged situations. The way we deal with people with intellectual disabilities, mental health problems or challenging behaviours has always caused concern. With an increasingly inclusive educational environment that promotes diversity, this concern has been extended to school learning contexts, creating the need to explore educational tools that allow educational agents to respond to all students. Successful results of Gentle Teaching in different contexts, suggest its potential and suitability for educational environments, through the creation of bonding relationships, which promote caring and security. In this paper we describe the concept of Gentle Teaching, its history, the pillars of the intervention model, support strategies and techniques, and approaches to management of disruptive behaviours, as opposed to more traditional paradigms. As a non-aversive approach to relationships, Gentle Teaching, can be an answer in supporting children who have difficulties in learning and behaviour, according to the legal guidelines for the protection of children's rights that disapprove physical or mental punishment. This relational model of positive interaction between the student and the educator, as the foundation for teaching, promotes meaningful relationships and can be a way of valuing the potential of each one, within the school context.

Understanding the influence of ISO 9001 certification on SMEs performance: two Portuguese case studies

Considering the importance of small and medium-sized businesses in the economy and that the majority of quality management systems (QMS) implemented in SMEs are based on the requirements of the ISO 9001 standard, with this work our focus is on studying the influence of ISO 9001 standard certification on performance in SMEs. The data was collected through interviews in two SMEs. The study showed that the implementation of an ISO 9001-based QMS has distinct effects on the performance of the SMEs studied. While the implementation of such QMS had significantly improved the performance in one of the companies, in the other, the few changes brought by certification were in terms of external image and organization of documentation and may not be deemed to affect performance significantly.

Small and medium-sized enterprises and the challenge of open innovation

Technological and market changes, a clear consequence of the increasing globalization process, have created a need among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that has never been felt before: that of successfully competing in broader markets. For that, SMEs need to be competitive in the market, adopting practices that allow them to obtain knowledge and resources that, together with their technologies, differentiate them from their competitors. As such, open innovation is an interesting path for all SMEs that seek to complement their internal resources and knowledge base through inter-organizational relationships. Through open innovation, companies interact with the outside world, changing the classic closed innovation paradigm. Through this bibliographic study, based on the analysis of 15 core articles on open innovation in SMEs, it was possible to identify the different strategies, perspectives and impact of open innovation on SMEs. Clearly, limited resources make SMEs more likely to interact outwardly , in order to obtain new knowledge and resources to leverage its competitive advantages. It was possible to conclude that SMEs rely heavily on open innovation practices, since, given their small size, they do not have all the necessary resources and knowledge. The results of this analysis also demonstrate that there are internal and external factors that influence the adoption of these practices, also highlighting the role of CEOs and the importance of social networks to access knowledge created outside the company's borders.

Organizational commitment: current perspectives and future trends

Organizational commitment is among the most studied topics in recent decades. Part of the interest in the topic is justified by the constant changes in the work environment. Thus, the construct of organizational commitment is part of the long tradition of studies that seek to identify and understand the personal factors that determine human behavior. This article intends to show the evolution of studies on the subject up to the present day, from a historical path of the theoretical and empirical development of the commitment construct, with emphasis, in particular, to the three-dimensional model of Meyer and Allen (1991), followed for the criticisms to the development of the concept, the current studies and the future perspective of the investigation.
