Leadership and hospital governance: promoting the quality of care in an aged country

The aging of the population has become a major challenge for most countries worldwide, as well as a focus of research, in the concrete case in the area of nursing. The overall decline in fertility rates and the prolongation of life expectancy per capita in both developed and developing countries since 1996 have led to a resurgence of the elderly population worldwide. Developed countries were the first to experience an aged society and are moving towards hyper-aged societies, as is the Portuguese case. Several population projections also indicate that the aging process of the world's population will accelerate in the coming decades. Through this scenario, this article aims to reflect on hospital leadership and governance in promoting the quality of care in an aging country, based on a literature review methodology.

Guardinha social work: intervention with children and adolescents in a pandemic context

In this paper we present the results of the research carried out in Brazil within the scope of the master’s in social work (ISMT/Coimbra, Portugal). We analysed (i) the conflicts and demands placed, during the COVID-19 pandemic, on Guardinha's services by children and adolescents included in socio-educational services and (ii) the way in which social work responses to the issues in question may have contributed to strengthen the citizenship of children and their families. In the research, a qualitative methodological approach was chosen. We carried out a literature review to problematize the issues related to the social vulnerability of children and the ways in which, in their daily intervention, social workers can contribute to their inclusion. The methodological procedure to collect the empirical material, we used a semi-structured interview to which 6 professionals responded. Results: it was possible to understand that specialized care for contemporary childhood and adolescence (in the municipality of Campinas) is a process in constant transformation/adaptation, capable of identifying the real needs in presence and enhancing action, the exercise of citizenship and development of children and adolescents.

Professional satisfaction and quality of nursing care – an integrative review

The professional satisfaction of nurses results from the interaction with several factors that can influence the performance of nurses, which accentuated the need to deepen their knowledge. This study aims to: understand the influence of job satisfaction on the quality of nursing care, for this purpose, an integrative literature review was carried out, and the research was carried out via the EBSCOhost search engine in several databases, in particular, Academic Search Complete, APA PsycInfo, Complementary Index, CINAHL, Directory of Open Access Journals, MEDLINE and Science Direct, Supplemental Index. After analysis and respecting the previously established inclusion and exclusion criteria, 8 studies were found, which highlight a greater influence of organizational factors than personal factors, in the job satisfaction, on the other hand, they also refer to a direct relationship between greater job satisfaction among nurses and a higher quality in health and care provided. The available literature clearly demonstrates that professional satisfaction influences the provision of nursing care and, consequently, its quality, as well as the performance of health services. It is crucial that managers, regardless of the contexts of practice, pay attention to professional satisfaction as a factor for improving quality in health and define policies and strategies to increase the professional satisfaction of nurses. The present study demonstrates that professional satisfaction has an undeniable impact on the quality of nursing care, despite its limitations, such as the sample and the time limit, which do not allow an unequivocal statement and/or generalization. Although considering necessary to carry out other studies similar and complementary to this one, and on a larger scale, it is possible to say that it was possible to give a contribution to a better understanding of the influence of nurses' professional satisfaction on the quality of nursing care.

Adaptation processes in adolescents after vertebro medullary trauma: an integrative review

Vertebro medullary Trauma (SVT) is a neurological condition that, when it occurs in adolescence, has an impact on the growth, development, and emotional state of adolescents, influencing the process of physical rehabilitation. Given the above, there is an increased need to investigate and understand the psychological impact that TVM has on the development of adolescents, on their psychological capacity and Quality of Life (QL). This review aimed to identify adaptation strategies used by adolescents with SVT to adapt to their condition, and how it influences their psychological development and, consequently, their quality of life. It was developed an integrative review in online databases via EBSCOhost and B-On, having retained 7 articles that were included for the analysis, all published since 2010. The results show that active coping and avoidance coping are the most used adaptation modes. Active coping is associated with decreasing suffering and avoidance coping with maladaptive psychosocial outcomes. Cognitive alteration, social support and emotional regulation revealed the most effective adaptive adaptation. Ineffective coping and avoidance are associated with anguish, depression, and anxiety, which affect and are predictors of QoL. The coping strategies used are intrinsically linked to the adaptation process of adolescents after suffering a SVT, and, due to their condition, they are more likely to adopt maladaptive strategies that result in mental disorders (depression and anxiety) and a lower quality of life. It is, therefore, necessary to identify the strategies that the adolescent is using at an early stage, to compensate that they aim at a positive adaptation.

Blockchain in healthcare, a bibliometric analysis from 2008 to 2021

Blockchain is a technology that has been gaining more and more prominence in the digital world. The properties of this technology initially designed for the Bitcoin cryptocurrency demonstrated, from an early age, great potential for applicability in other areas and there are already several industries that benefit from this system. The healthcare sector was not indifferent to the implementation of this technology and the association of blockchain and thealthcare has been the subject of particular interest. Therefore, this article aimed to map the state of the art of Blockchain in healthcare through a bibliometric analysis of publications and citations that contained the keywords “Blockchain” and “Healthcare” in the title, abstract, or keywords, during the period extending from 2008 to the present. Through the Scopus database and its integrated research program, a total of 1584 publications were obtained which allowed the analysis of volume of work and citations, the countries of origin of the publications; and the articles with the greatest impact in the literature. With the analysis of other words or concepts associated with Blockchain and Healthcare, we sought to predict the trend for future investigations. It was possible to confirm the growing interest in this technology and its potential application in healthcare, specially in terms of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Electronic Patient Records (EMR).

The impact of the environment on the quality of life

The mains purpose of this study was to answer the following question: is there a relationship between indebtedness and quality of life? To achieve this objective quantitative methodology was used. For data collection, a questionnaire was created based on the OEC-DECO (Frade, 2013) and WHOQOL-BREF (Carona et al.,2006) questionnaires. This study identified a positive relationship between indebtedness (have credits) and quality of life. After analysing the various domains of quality of life (physical, psychological, social and environment) and the quality of life in general, it was concluded that for the psychological and the environment domains, quality of life is, on average, higher for people who hold credits. And also, for the psychological domain, the quality of life is, on average, higher for people who have both mortgage and non-mortgage credit when compared to people without credit or people with only mortgage credit. As for the physical domain, it was not possible to establish a cause-effect relationship between indebtedness and quality of life. After studying over-indebtedness (having arrears in instalments), for all the domains was found that, on average, the quality of life of over-indebtedness people was significant lower that those who are able to pay back their credits on time.

The potential of artificial intelligence in management

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has overcome the barriers of what was thought impossible and the cartography of published research shows cases where its adoption makes businesses faster, smarter and safer. However, and as is a trend in automation, AI is also subject to many dogmas, fears and even some threats at the business level, namely whether it could have an impact on jobs. This article aims to identify the morphology of the perception that managers have about the potential of AI in organizations. This is a study from a qualitative perspective, of a descriptive nature, adopting the interview as a method of data collection. The objective proposed above in this exploratory study allowed us to conclude that managers of organizations are relatively familiar with the concept of AI. Regarding its application in sectors of activity, we can conclude that AI has a noticeable impact on processes and activities in the Financial, Retail and Technology sectors. Regarding the Health and Energy sectors, although the impact is already relevant, the introduction of AI in these sectors, following the sample, is still at an embryonic stage. However, all managers are aware that this tool will be the future of the business world and that only organizations that use it best will be able to remain competitive in the long term.

"The colour of my skin defines myself": experiences of racial discrimination suffered by black people

The objective was to analyze the experiences of racial discrimination suffered by black people. Exploratory, descriptive and cross-sectional study, with a quantitative approach, part of the larger research entitled: Experiences of Discrimination Suffered by Black People, carried out from September to November 2021, with 205 black participants from Brazilian states. The instrument used was the Scale of Experiences of Discrimination, in addition to the collection of sociodemographic data, both through an online survey. Most of the participants were female, 71.4% (n=145); aged between 20 and 25 years, 59.0% (n=118); residents in the state of Ceará, 75.9% (n=98). Regarding unfair treatment related to racial discrimination, it was observed that participants try something when being treated unfairly. Turning to the experiences of discrimination, it was found that black people usually talk to other people when they suffer from some experience of racial discrimination. It was evidenced that the participants constantly suffer from experiences of racial discrimination in different spaces and share them with other people. Black people are too concerned about the unfair treatment they and others suffer because of their color and their race.

Motivation in the work environment and its effect on job performance: a study in the banking industry

The Portuguese banking sector has been undergoing deep structural changes, influencing the motivation and productivity of its employees. In this sense, taking into account the importance of the sector and the scarce information in the literature on the subject, it was considered relevant to study it. With the objective of analyzing the influence that motivation has on the performance of the functions of the employees in the banking sector, a qualitative methodology was adopted, using 33 interviews with employees from seven different banks in the District of Viseu. The content analysis of the answers allowed us to conclude that motivation contributes positively to professional performance and, consequently, to productivity, that the factors that most contribute to motivation are the good relationship between colleagues, the workload, the recognition by superiors, the awards and the personal and family achievement, and that the focus on objectives, the positive spirit and the conciliation between personal and professional life are the strategies most used by employees for greater motivation. It was also possible to conclude that Bank managers should prioritize readjusting the number of employees, assigning new functions to those who have been in the same position for a long time, exerting less pressure, as well as providing greater recognition and praise and granting financial rewards or performance bonuses, in order to promote greater commitment and motivation from employees.

Nurse's action in the face of suicidal ideation in adolescents and young adults

Introduction: Suicidal ideation, suicide and self-injurious behaviors constitute an unavoidable public health problem, with suicide being one of the main causes of death in adolescence. These are very complex phenomena, which do not result from just one cause, but from multiple interactions between biological, psychological, social, and even cultural factors. Objective: To systematize knowledge about the nurse's action in the face of suicidal ideation in adolescents and young adults. Method: This is an integrative literature review, carried out from November 25th, 2021, to January 26th, 2022, in the following databases: VHL (Virtual Health Library), Google Academic and Scielo (Scientific Electronic Library Online), with the following descriptors: “suicidal ideation”, “young adult”, “nurse’s action”, combined with the Boolean operator “AND”. Results: Six articles were selected, the most evident of which refers to risk and protective factors and that the nurse's action, despite being verbalized as necessary in the prevention of suicidal ideation and behaviors, is still not fully demonstrated. Conclusion: The selected articles revealed flaws in the work performed by nurses in caring for adolescents with suicidal ideation. The lack of knowledge and lack of training on the part of nurses, as well as the taboos and consequent prejudices are also evident. Thus, nursing must be qualified to provide ethical and effective care, physically establishing the patient as it provides psychological support, prioritizing qualified listening and carefree from prejudice or value judgments.

Decision-making in nursing care management: a narrative review of the literature

Decision making is a fundamental skill in the nursing practice and the complexity of this process requires the ability to meet the needs of patients through quick and effective decisions. The current article is a narrative review study on decision-making in nursing care management and it was based on the following research question: what is the understanding on decision making in nursing care management? The specific objectives were: to understand the relationship that exists between autonomy and leadership in the decision-making process, to identify the factors that influence it, to analyze the role that communication plays, as well as the knowledge and professional experience in this process. The analysis of the articles included in the study were accessed through the EBSCO and Medline databases using the descriptors "decision making", "decision making process", nurs*, Communication, Leadership. We noticed that decision- making, because it has a professional value in nursing practice, whether in clinical or management areas, has been a health topic addressed in several national and international research papers. The nurse must know the factors that contribute to decision -making and must have the necessary tools to act, which are essential for providing quality care to the person.
