Mediating effect of burnout on the relationship between grit and turnover intentions among the private tertiary school teachers in Region XI: a convergent design

This study aimed to investigate the mediating effect of burnout on the relationship between grit and turnover intention of private tertiary school teachers in Region XI. A convergent mixed-methods design was utilized. A total of 303 private tertiary school teachers who were at least three years already in the service in Region XI were selected using purposive sampling technique. Adapted survey tools and interview guide questions were used to gather the essential data. The statistical tools used were mean, standard deviation, Pearson Product Moment of Correlation, and the Sobel z-test. The Colaizzi’s method was utilized to elucidate the qualitative data. The findings revealed that private tertiary school teachers’ level of burnout and turnover intention were low, and their level of grit was high. Moreover, the relationship among these variables was significant. Also, the mediating effect of burnout on the relationship between grit and turnover intention was significant, although it was just partial. The lived experiences of teachers were explained further by the themes revealing personal, work, and client-related burnout; positive dispositions on the teaching profession; underlying reasons for low level of attrition; and invigorating grit and strength as reasons to stay. Furthermore, the impact of these experiences on their beliefs and attitudes included: staying is beneficial, adhering commitment to excellence, and demonstrating positivity in all circumstances. Finally, the quantitative findings corroborate with the qualitative findings.

Challenges and mechanisms of teachers in the implementation of modular distance learning in the Philippines: a phenomenological study

COVID-19 pandemic brought so many changes in the state of education after school’s temporary closure. Educational institutions transitioned to modular distance learning from the usual face-to-face teaching which put both teachers and students less prepared, if not totally unprepared. This qualitative phenomenological study explored the challenges and mechanisms of teachers in the implementation of modular distance learning in the Philippines amidst COVID-19 pandemic. Data were gathered through in-depth interview to twelve (12) teachers, six (6) were teaching in the elementary, and the other six (6) teaching in the secondary level. Recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed using the following steps: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. Ethical issues were considered in the conduct of the study. Results revealed that the challenges of teachers in modular distance learning includes time-consuming, incomplete and unanswered modules, inadequate parental support, and insufficient trainings to teachers. The mechanisms utilized by teachers to overcome the challenges includes time management, regular communication to parents and students, reskilling and upskilling of teachers, and utilization of blended learning. With this, it is recommended that DepEd should continue to undertake monitoring and evaluation on the implemented modular distance learning to assess its quality and relevance on the current status of education in the country.

Deepening teachers’ engagement to improve learners’ performance in modular learning through OCEANS 13 program

The outbreak of COVID- 19 challenged the education sector to continue the delivery of quality and accessible education. Most teachers in the Senior High School were concerned about the lack of motivation on the part of the learners to submit the modules given to them as well as the activity sheets during remediation resulting to poor academic performance. Hence, this study aimed to improve learners’ performance in modular learning by deepening teachers’ engagement through the OCEANS 13 Program. This program had 3 phases. The first phase was AGAK (Ang Gitinguha Atong Kab-uton) or (Reach our Dreams) which was a Parent-Teacher-Learner Consultation, the second phase was Intensified Home Visitation  (IHV) and the third phase was HBO (Hawak-kamay with the Brgy. Officials) or (hand-in-hand with community officials) which was a partnership of the school and community officials. These interventions were conducted to the 20 Grade 11 learners who were at risk of failing during the onset of COVID-19, School Year 2020-2021. The conduct of the 2 phases of this program has significantly improved the learners’ performance as it is evident in the learners’ status at the end of the semester with a 100% of the students who passed in all subject areas. The 3rd phase was not conducted anymore. Results from the Pre and Post-Intervention Surveys to the 73 learners with grades 75-79 about their teachers’ engagement revealed that the difference between the two means is significant even at the 0.01 level (p = 0.000345, p < .01).  Hence, this signifies that OCEANS 13, is very effective not just in the improvement of the learners’ performance but also it changed significantly the perception of the students on the treatment of their teachers toward them. Based from the results of this study, we recommend to continue this program.

Pedagogical practices of the grade 6 & grade 7 teachers in teaching reading on the blended learning modality

This study dealt with the pedagogical practices of the Grade 6 & Grade 7 teachers of Digos City National High School and Rizal Central Elementary School from the Schools Division Office of Digos City, Davao del Sur in teaching reading on the blended learning modality. Participants of the study were purposively chosen. Open-ended interview questions related to pedagogical practices were formulated. A qualitative research design, using a phenomenological method on exploring the pedagogical practices of teachers teaching reading in English was utilized. Based on the result of the study, there are three basic components that describe the pedagogical practices of reading teachers which are pre-reading activities, during reading activities, and post-reading activities. Reading teachers used these activities as they worked to overcome the difficulties of teaching reading during the epidemic. Lack of support, lack of technology, and lack of motivation were the challenges that reading teachers encountered upon teaching reading to Grades 6 and 7. Finally, collaboration is the leading ingredient of the reading model that directs the actions of the three elements: the parents, teachers, and students. To make the model functional, these elements should collaboratively work. It is hereby recommended that in order to enhance teachers’ capacity to teach reading, continuous training may be conducted to supplement teachers’ knowledge and capacitate them in teaching reading, teacher-parent dialogue may be conducted to help parents fully understand their roles in the success of their children and the further enhancement of the reading model by conducting research relevant to the subject being studied.
