Accurate perspective - the graphic representation used in architecture - has been subject of much controversy ever since the italian renaissance. Leon Battista Alberti, the first scholar to theorize on the" Brunelleschian invention" in the realm of painting (De Pictura), proscribes this resource in his De Re Aedificatoria, arguing against illusionism in architectural drawing. Throughout the centuries, perspective gained other meanings, yet not much different from its original intention. This text analyzes the reasons behind its historical permanence and finds common ground for opinions in favor of and against its artistic legitimacy.

Iracema beach developed following the installation of a port designed to export products from the state of Ceará; in spite of not being part of the social life happening in downtown Fortaleza, it was fundamental for the economic growth of this city. When the port moved to another area of the city, some of its buildings - warehouses and trading offices associated with the port activities - were abandoned. Only in the mid 90s did the local government invest heavily in this area, building large projects that changed the area's spatial characteristics. In 1998, the state of Ceará government, encouraged Programa Cores da Cidade (Colors of the City Program) to renovate several historical buildings in an effort to consolidate its achievements in this area. Thus, part of the architectural patrimony had its façades restored and the interiors refurbished for new uses, mainly leisure and tourism activities. The renovation of the old buildings brought intense property speculation, which caused some of the former residents (mostly artists) to move away and attracted bars, restaurants and nightclubs. These new activities helped shape Iracema beach into the largest tourism hub in Fortaleza. This article provides an overview of the treatment given the architectural patrimony in the old port area of Fortaleza.

The most primitive of uses for the built environment, sleep is tremendously important to one's health. An instinctive act that is obviously regenerating, we know it can be upset by both health and environmental conditions - though it's actual mechanisms still cause much controversy. In healthcare facilities, noise is a much bigger problem than either architects or doctors in general imagine. Both design and behavior affect the quality of the environment and of therefore, sleep. The therapeutic environment proposition suggests we can do better than merely"not harm" and actually create supportive environments that improve patient outcomes and staff productivity. Consequently, we must redefine functionality. The exercise proposed here is one of studying a problem from two complementary viewpoints, thus the choice of one aspect of the built environment and one of its uses: acoustics and sleep. The article lays out the evidence and contributes a better understanding of the real value of environmental acoustic quality and good sleep, and describes what would be good place for sleep.
The paper focuses on the work of two modernist writers, Menotti del Picchia and Mario de Andrade, whose texts were published in the 1920s in Correio Paulistano and Diário Nacional, newspapers of Sao Paulo's Republican Party and the Democratic Party, respectively. The aim of the project is to shed some light on two particular periods of these authors' works - the beginning and the end of that decade. Matters of interest addressed in such writing include the quest for a national style in the arts and architecture during a decade characterized by intense urban and social changes, crises within the oligarchy that dominated Brazil's Old Republic and an ideological awakening that followed World War I, emphasizing the relationship of the authors and the coffee oligarchy.

Dinâmicas do uso e ocupação do solo no território metropolitano de Lisboa 1940-2001
Based on a rigorous and precise method (only official cartography, systematic geo-reference and crosschecks whenever possible), this ongoing research project composed images of the urban and rural occupation of the municipal territories of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA) in the four available years: 1942, 1965, 1991 and 2001. With the help of these images, this research work describes the changes in land-use in the LMA, in each of the periods concerned. Each chapter of this paper corresponds to one of these years and starts with an overview of the general context (political, social and economic, and legal), followed by a descriptive interpretation of the urbanization processes themselves and the corresponding dynamics of the land-use changes. Each chapter then concludes by presenting findings provided by images and by the processes interpreted. It should be pointed out that these are mere initial findings in a research project which otherwise provides tools for understanding the urbanization process of the largest portuguese urban agglomeration.
