The photographic essay Chucros Objects gathers some remains of insulin use to control diabetes with familiar objects, proposing discussions about medicines and sugar consumption, memory and objects, and dialogues between contemporary art and anthropology.

Presentation of the Dossier "Arts and anthropologies: street poetics and politics and ways of doing ethnography". In organizing this dossier, we continue an itinerary that we have followed for some time now, linked on one hand to the intersections between art and politics, and on the other to the overlapping of different practices and modes of ethnographic and artistic making. Along with another anthropologist and maker of body art, Julia Ruiz di Giovanni, absent here but ever present in a dialogue maintained over recent years, our aim has been to potentialize this exchange, taking place both during academic discussions in congresses, seminars and courses, and during hybrid events with artists and researchers, not to mention less formal conversations that have criss-crossed the Atlantic Ocean countless times.

This article presents reflections from an ethnographic research on amulets and charms at the Pitt Rivers Museum and criticizes the production of knowledge. I describe the challenges and practices of contemporary anthropologists in the management, study and display of amulets and charms from other societies. I highlight the constant notion of transformation in the history of the museum. Following, I record reflections on unexpected research experiences: i. recent research result by the museum staff ii. Movements of an ethnography in groups of songs; which suggest investigation around contemporary amulets and charms. I conclude by briefly calling for the potential of ethnography performed in the practice of singing collectively. I stress the importance of a critical attitude towards analytical categories and assumptions reproduced by anthropology that are allowed by the position occupied by the discipline and its alliances - often silenced - with the hegemonic practices of knowledge production.

Review about Amaral, Renata. 2012. Pedra da Memória: Euclides Talabyan, minha universidade é o tempo. Pedra da Memória: Euclides Talabyan, minha universidade é o tempo (Memory’s Stone: Euclides Talabyan, my university is the Time), authored by researcher Renata Amaral, was published in 2012 as part of a larger project that also encompasses a documentary film and an exhibition that has travelled throughout several Brazilian cities. A hardcover, multilingual edition (written in Portuguese, English and French), it has a square format (29x29cm), 240 pages and high-quality printing.

This is a review of the short film Entre Parentes (Among relatives) directed by Tiago de Aragão, from the Universidade Federal de Brasília, which placed second in the Pierre Verger Award at the 31st Brazilian Meeting of Anthropology. Following the paths that the filmmaker travels and observes, we are provoked by scenes of an ongoing war that evokes places and positions. There is no middle ground in war, and the context itself says so – the end of April 2017, one year after the impeachment of president Dilma Rousseff, which removed the first elected woman in Brazil’s history. The same occasion when Brasília received the 14th Acampamento Terra Livre, having been the largest collective mobilization between the indigenous peoples of Brazil and their allies.

DOMINGOS, Emilio. Deixa na régua. 2016, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, 73 min. Deixa na régua (2016) serves as a kind of sequel to Emílio Domingos’ previous work A Batalha do Passinho (2012). As in the previous one, in this new documentary, Domingos fixates on the aesthetics created in the physical and symbolic spaces in the outskirts of big cities. This is done by unraveling the (not always commercial) relations between barbers and their clients in the suburbs and poorer neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro.

Elaborando um panorama das artes cênicas no país, Edélcio Mostaço narra por meio dos autores, obras, festivais e críticos que marcaram a dramaturgia contemporânea, um fragmento da história do Brasil. O autor também faz uma cuidadosa apresentação da chegada da teoria da recepção e apresenta seu escopo e assimilação no Brasil.

This text aims to present a broad reflection on the beginnings of Macao and Canton transformation process into tourist places. This exploratory study is conducted through an analysis of Western travelers’ accounts in Macau and Canton, between the 1830s and the 1870s. We can observe how recreational or tourist use of urban space contributes to the overall transformation of the perception of these cities that appear, in this context, less fragmented and segregated. The first tour guides on Canton and Macau emphasize the transformation of the representation of these border territories, which were until then seen as a simple zone of contacts and trade exchanges between China and the West. Macau and Canton are then described as urban places, inserted in an international tourist circuit and that have acquired a cosmopolitan dimension.

Durante a preparação para a Copa do Mundo de 2014, setores da mídia, ONGs e o Estado contribuíram para criar um pânico crescente sobre a prostituição. Incursões policiais violentas em locais lícitos de comércio sexual aumentaram e a polícia convidou a imprensa para transmitir o fechamento do local de turismo sexual de maior visibilidade no dia da abertura da Copa. Na verdade, a prostituição não aumentou no Rio de Janeiro e não houve casos confirmados de tráfico sexual associados ao evento na cidade. A “limpeza” das zonas de prostituição foi uma apropriação das terras com o objetivo de promover a limpeza social e a “renovação urbana” em Copacabana (Rio de Janeiro). Este artigo analisa como atores estatais e não-estatais construíram imagens de “gringos” – frequentemente como invasores predatórios –, criando um pânico moral para promover suas próprias agendas. Baseando-se em trabalho de campo etnográfico realizado com profissionais do sexo e clientes antes, durante e depois da Copa, a pesquisa analisa as fantasias projetadas sobre os “gringos” por vários atores – profissionais do sexo, setores da mídia, cristãos evangélicos e feministas, entre outros. Argumenta-se que os clientes “gringos” durante a Copa podem ser entendidos como turistas sexuais atípicos, que possuem uma agência limitada e que vivenciaram diferenças importantes no capital social e na competência cultural. A crença nas ideias preconcebidas sobre a masculinidade do “gringo” gerou consequências sociais imprevistas, incluindo a marginalização ainda maior das mulheres vulneráveis que trabalham na economia sexual do Rio.

As favelas do Rio de Janeiro têm sido alvo de intensa visitação turística desde os anos 2000. Se antes esse turismo se concentrava na Rocinha, paradigmática favela turística, hoje expande-se para outras favelas da cidade, e tal expansão vem acompanhada da ampliação do debate sobre esse tipo específico de turismo. Neste artigo, analiso três eventos de disputa em torno do tema “turismo em favelas”, ocorridos entre 2014 e 2015: a série de debates “Fala Vidigal!”; o I Congresso de Turismo de Base Comunitária da Rocinha; e o Grupo de Trabalho (GT) sobre Turismo em Favelas na Câmara dos Vereadores do Rio de Janeiro. Os três eventos se apresentaram como interessantes cenários para observação participante e análise dos discursos sobre turismo em favela, tanto por parte da academia, como também por parte de empreendedores externos, empreendedores locais, moradores de favelas e órgãos públicos.
