The experience of the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Service in São Paulo: the case of the restoration of Saint Michel's Church, 1939-1941

This article, the first in a series of four reports, assists in an understanding of brazilian architectural heritage preservation practices. It analyses the experience of the federal organ then called the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Service (SPHAN in portuguese) in São Paulo. By analysing one of its first restoration works, we will review the first years of this organ's activities in an effort to understand its structure, how its staff was organized, and the difficulties presented by its scarce resources as well as by the lack of previous experiences in heritage preservation. We will primarily attempt to identify the concepts that guided the preservation and restoration work, as well as the methods and the techniques used in preserving these assets. The preservation work at Saint Michel's church - among the first buildings" discovered" by SPHAN - counted on the active involvement of Mário de Andrade. This work, together with the restoration of the Embu Convent, marked the beginning of the activities of São Paulo's regional chapter. It also pointed the way to future work, under the direction of architect Luis Saia. This analysis will proceed in three other reports, which study the work at Saint Antony's ranch and chapel in São Roque, at the City Council and Jail building in Atibaia, and at Pau D'Alho's farm in São José do Barreiro. These reports will follow SPHAN's development up to the mid-1970s. In pointing out the connections between the restoration and conservation work carried out at these sites, we will study the ways in which this organ absorbed the most important theories of its time, from Viollet-le-Duc onward. We will also examine the recommendation of the first international reports for heritage preservation initiatives within the specifically brazilian cultural context of the first half of the 20th century.

The Arts and Crafts School of Rio de Janeiro was founded in 1856. It was established to create a labor market for Brazil's first industrial plan, based on the teaching of design. The idea was that the teaching of drawing, with an emphasis on mechanical arts, would turn the city itself into a work of art. Rui Barbosa took part in this project, inspired by the ideas of British art critic John Ruskin.

Amâncio Moura Guedes is undoubtedly one of the most lauded architects for his work in Africa, particularly in Mozambique. Of Anglo-Saxon training and irreverent spirit, as witnessed by his architecture, he had strong associations with the Team Ten in 1960, becoming an architect whose works and projects were published in Europe, in the United States, and in South Africa, where he taught. He attended various events in the architectural world, among them the 1961 São Paulo Biennial. Works such as The laughing lion and the Aircraft house became especially well known. However, his vision of the city then called Lourenço Marques is almost unknown. He was a disconcerting critic of the existing colonial-based urban framework, which disregarded the spontaneous peri-urban settlements known as" Caniço", which today correspond to nearly two thirds of the city of Maputo. This 1963" manifesto" not only provides an ironic view of the city's future growth but is also a seminal and even timeless text. To some extent, it is a temporal reference for settlements similar to those found today in Luanda's" muceque" or even Rio de Janeiro's slums.

An assessment of some experiences in disaster prevention and mitigation in Latin America: players and roles

In the last twenty years," natural" disasters have killed and wounded thousands of people and have caused physical damage worth billions of dollars. These disasters had their origin not in extraordinary natural phenomena, but in the lack of plans and programs for preventing and mitigating humanitarian disasters. This paper analyses some successful Latin American experiences in preventing and mitigating such disasters.

What kind of samba is that? Samba and batucada in Barcelona

This is a study about music scenes and transnationalization. I analyzed how the internationalization of Brazilian music and the arrival of Brazilian immigrants led to the creation of new sound spaces to experience music in Barcelona. Also, mapping was performed to search for music scenes of samba, samba-reggae and batucada. The research involved methodical procedures based on participant observation, interviews, audiovisual record, and radio listening. Theoretical analysis followed the principles and tools of urban, visual and media anthropology. This study is the result of an intense ethnographic work carried out between June 2017 and July 2018.

Evgen Bavcar: autorretratos e as imagens-mancha
