Este capítulo tem como objetivo destacar exemplos que estiveram ligados à Universidade do Porto (UP), e a outros locais da cidade que a acolhe, no que respeita à recolha de objetos, artefactos e restos humanos e à constituição de coleções em sociedades científicas e museus. Os exemplos referidos passarão pela Sociedade Carlos Ribeiro, pela Sociedade Portuguesa de Antropologia e Etnologia (SPAE), pelas Faculdades de Letras (FL) e Ciências (FC) da UP e pelo Museu de História Natural da UP (MHNUP). O texto procurará estabelecer a ligação de António Augusto Esteves Mendes Correia (1888-1960) às coleções e aos organismos antecessores do Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical (IICT) nomeadamente da Junta das Missões Geográficas e de Investigações coloniais (JMGIC) (depois Junta das Missões Geográficas e de Investigações do Ultramar - JMGIU), a partir da UP. As coleções que estavam na UP e que passaram a estar integradas no IICT foram sobretudo obtidas através das missões antropológicas impulsionadas pelo próprio Mendes Correia nos anos 30 do século XX. Por outro lado, algumas coleções que pertenceram ao IICT estão neste momento no Museu Nacional de Etnologia. Mendes Correia foi um dos fundadores da SPAE (1918) (Fig. 2) e o principal mentor da Escola de Antropologia do Porto. No seu contexto de atuação, e além dos esforços movidos no sentido de promover a antropologia como disciplina universitária, procurou reunir diversos elementos que pudessem ser estudados pela comunidade científica. O estímulo para a recolha de exemplares viria a ser alcançado, por exemplo, através da constituição de equipas de trabalho na UP, da criação de missões antropológicas às então colónias e dos seus discursos na Assembleia Nacional (AN), durante o período em que foi deputado (1945-1957). Graças às suas diligências e dos seus colaboradores, assim como de outros atores que lhes foram contemporâneos, foi possível reunir um espólio considerável passível de ser estudado e de contribuir para os avanços da investigação científica no país.

A proposta da Revista Gama associa-se ao projeto do Congresso CSO — Criadores Sobre outras Obras — mas com uma opção editorial específica, de valorizar as obras merecedoras de uma revisão ao seu tempo, à sua génese, ao seu contexto. O estudo destes contextos permite um olhar integrador sobre a cultura. A mudança é profunda. Hoje, se já não se trata de mudar o mundo, restará ocupar os espaços desgovernados: é este o perigo na “Sociedade sem relato” (Canclini). Talvez a pesquisa que se impõe seja aquela que consegue estabelecer novas relações entre os referentes e agentes culturais, sem ambicionar revelar tramas ocultas, mas propondo linhas condutoras que permitam uma leitura do mundo no desordenamento cultural. É desde esse ponto que “a arte pode continuar a nos dar, nesta desencantada mudança de século, o mínimo de utopia sem a qual o progresso material perde o sentido da emancipação e se transforma na pior das perversões” (Martín-Barbero). Alguns dos 15 artigos apresentados neste número 8 da revista Gama devolvem-nos conhecimentos sobre propostas artísticas menos conhecidas no decorrer das décadas. Artistas retêm na sua memória a obra de alguns dos seus companheiros de trabalho: o seu olhar é privilegiado para conhecer o fazer artístico pelo lado de dentro, testemunhar o entretecer das tramas onde se elaboram os discursos, intervenções, que constroem a cultura. Lança-se o olhar, procura-se entre os iguais estudam-se as falas. As coisas precisam de voltar a ser pensadas.

Intratumor genetic heterogeneity (ITH) is the main obstacle to effective cancer treatment and a major mechanism of drug resistance. It results from the continuous evolution of different clones of a tumor over time. However, the molecular features underlying the emergence of genetically-distinct subclonal cell populations remain elusive. Here, we conducted an exhaustive characterization of ITH across 2807 tumor samples from 16 cancer types. Integration of ITH scores and somatic variants detected in each tumor sample revealed that mutations in epigenetic modifier genes are associated with higher ITH levels. In particular, genes that regulate genome-wide histone and DNA methylation emerged as being determinant of high ITH. Indeed, the knockout of histone methyltransferase SETD2 or DNA methyltransferase DNMT3A using the CRISPR/Cas9 system on cancer cells led to significant expansion of genetically-distinct clones and culminated in highly heterogeneous cell populations. The ITH scores observed in knockout cells recapitulated the heterogeneity levels observed in patient tumor samples and correlated with a better mitochondrial bioenergetic performance under stress conditions. Our work provides new insights into tumor development, and discloses new drivers of ITH, which may be useful as either predictive biomarkers or therapeutic targets to improve cancer treatment.

O Canal de Passeio e Lazer do Palácio Nacional de Queluz encontra-se hoje totalmente revestido com múltiplas composições azulejares de diferentes feições plásticas, que precorrem um tempo cronológico que vai da segunda metade do século XVIII até ao início do século XX, quando provavemente se encerrou o capítuli de campanhas decorativas do canal. O versátil José Maria Pereira Júnior (1841-1921), mais conhecido por Pereira Cão, que desde cedo criou ligações com a Casa Real Portuguesa, foi incumbido de complementar, ao nível azulejar, diversas secções do canal dos jardins do Palácio de Queluz, que se encontrariam extremamente deterioradas, tendo sido também responsável pelo arranjo e revestimento do corpo central elevado, que correspondia à antiga localização da Casa da Música. Nesta ampla empreitada, que se realizou nos primeiros anos do século XX, Pereira Júnior fez uso de diversas iconografias para o revestimento do Canal de Passeio e Lazer.

The present study consists of a reflexive elaboration on the oeuvre and theory of Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky. We will, at first, go through some analysis and philosophical thesis on the concepts of sacredness and time, in order to shape a theoretical foundation and a possible «revelation» that we believe to be revealed through art and the authentic aesthetic experience. This experience, as referred to by Tarkovsky, constitutes a sensible mediation and a legitimate revelation of the creative spirit of man, as well as of its «state of creature», from the expanded field of theology. The dedication to the construction of a temporal sculpture is constituent of the film image of this director and has memory as its original matter. Memory, this time-immanent substance that unveils the human experience, will, in Tarkovsky manifest itself in a tone of historical criticism of the desacralization that occurred in modernity, and, sometimes, as a reflection of his affections. These are ideas that, above all in the analysis of certain titles in his filmography, will come to light and in them, we will seek to understand this poetic mediation that is founded on a notion and an experience of sacred time, which we believe was felt by the director. This notion implies a scission in man's own history and maintains an intimate relationship with a certain mysticism that surrounds and characterizes the work of Andrei Tarkovsky. Thus, as shadow and final praise, a «sublime suspension» before the aesthetic experience will occur, a suspension that happens outside of chronological (profane) time, in contact with what is said to be transcendent and sacred, and this experience is what emerges and fascinates us at the encounter with the Tarkovskian work.

Há cegueira nos pintores? A escuta e revisitação dos trabalhos que nos antecedem permite acrescentar riqueza ao presente e ao alargar as opções para as intervenções do futuro. Este é um desígnio que nos importa onde a educação artística se entrecruza com a história da arte, na perspetiva de um passado que aos criadores é uma parte do seu corpo. A arte significa-se e ressignifica-se a cada resgate de uma obra perdida, a cada descoberta de um autor menos conhecido. Há capítulos que se reabrem depois da publicação alargada de um corpus desconhecido – veja-se o caso de Claude Cahun (Doy, 2007), que possibilitou um novo entendimento dos temas de género e da autorrepresentação na arte contemporânea. Esta é uma opção de resgate, de reconhecimento, para procurar sentidos desconhecidos ou mais ou menos esquecidos. Também é uma opção que experimenta a reflexão mais demorada, recusando a política fast fashion de alguns sectores que tomam as artes como um dos apartados da secção de tendências. As obras pedem maturação, tempo para produzir efeito, latência para uma disseminação eficiente. É este o sentido dos 17 artigos selecionados para o número 7 da Revista Gama, estudos artísticos: dar a conhecer, pela voz dos próprios agentes criadores, obras e autores que é preciso visitar, reaprender, reconhecer. Reuniram-se aqui algumas possibilidades de reconhecimento, autores desconhecidos, obras agora reveladas, inéditos que são divulgados. Lança-se pontes para conhecer o percurso de autores como Villari Herrmann, Edgard da Rocha Miranda, Raymonde Carasco, Armínio Kaiser, António Alfredo, Roberto Rodrigues, entre outros autores e outras obras. Após o livro de Júlio Pomar (1986) Da cegueira dos pintores, encontramos uma justificação da Revista Gama: lançar o olhar de artistas, um olhar plástico, operativo, sobre as obras de outros artistas, para um retomar do seu conhecimento.

Crescer na intervenção e na comunicação é um dos objetivos da Revista Gama, estudos artísticos. Promove-se a comunicação, formal, dentro das regras da comunicação académica, através de textos cuja característica comum é serem escritos por artistas, sobre a obra de outros artistas. Este foi o critério base que inspirou o projeto das iniciativas associadas ao Congresso CSO (criadores sobre outras obras), que já completou seis anos de disseminação. A Revista Gama singularizou-se por convocar artistas e obras que de algum modo estariam esquecidos, desconhecidos, ou ainda pouco divulgados. Obras cuja execução tem raízes em passados mais ou menos recentes, mas que pelo excesso de discursos na contemporaneidade, não obtiveram a divulgação desejada. Este é um propósito de intervenção no conhecimento patrimonial: as obras existem, foram executadas, enriquecem o nosso património, mas há que as fazer funcionar, dar a conhecer, aos outros artistas, aos especialistas, ao grande público. Assim se reuniram neste número 6 da Revista Gama vinte e quatro artigos originais, procurando-se, na sua sequência e articulação, algumas relações de pertinência e afinidade. Olhares sobre arquivos, sobre acervos, sobre coleções, conjuntos muitas vezes fechados e em perigo de esquecimento, ou de incompreensão: uma entrada discreta que se abre para o interior de uma câmara escura, que é um espaço cheio de imagens por revelar.

Nature-based solutions (NbS) are increasingly recognized as viable tools for sustainable urban water management. This article explores the implementation of NbS in two distinct cities, Singapore and Lisbon, to demonstrate that NbS can work in very different contexts and spark new thoughts on the urban–nature relationship and to identify commonalities that drive and enable the implementation of NbS in different context. Literature review-based research was conducted to examine the types of NbS implemented, the common drivers, the governance model, and the plural functionalities of the solutions. The research shows that, despite the differences, the two cities shared common drivers (including water supply, flood control, and resident demand for green space) and goals, such as improving water quality and overall quality of life, through the deployment of NbS. With rapid urban expansion, water use increase, and the impacts of climate change, NbS can be effective tools to deliver integrated benefits and improve the liveability of cities.

A revista Gama prossegue o aprofundamento da sua linha editorial específica e dentro do projeto mais alargado de desafiar criadores a debaterem e apresentar a obra de outros criadores, dentro do espaço descentrado que é o universo dos idiomas ibéricos. Trata-se de, dentro deste tema mais abrangente, revisitar arquivos, autores de épocas um pouco recuadas, de resgatar do esquecimento o património que existe e urge apresentar, discutir, colocar em ação, fazer funcionar, pela voz dos artistas. A arte necessita de ser ativada por intermédio do pensamento, e com ele, do discurso. Há vozes silenciosas que aguardam olhos, ouvidos, inquietações, deslumbramentos. Quando uma peça é descoberta é como se voltasse a ser feita: esse é o paradoxo do documento. A arte é vestígio e ao mesmo tempo universalidade, eternidade. É local e total. É sempre, em simultâneo, sem contradição, facto e possibilidade, presença e ausência. Os vinte e quatro artigos apresentados neste número cinco da Revista Gama oferecem outros tantos pontos de vista sobre os discursos artísticos. Recupera-se obra desconhecida, mostram-se obras, descobrem-se autores desaparecidos. Aqui a arte depositou-se, precipitou-se, tornou-se visível ao resgate. O resgate, operação de amor, é feito por artistas. Os públicos estão no futuro, à nossa espera.

Nos estudos sobre a ansiedade infantil tem sido dado algum relevo ao papel dos pais no desenvolvimento e manutenção das perturbações de ansiedade. Sabe-se que os pais são modelos de comportamentos e de significações e um dos principais contextos de vida e de desenvolvimento das crianças. Estudos sobre as significações parentais têm demonstrado que dependendo das causas que os pais atribuem aos comportamentos dos filhos, os pais recorrem a estratégias diferentes para lidar com esses comportamentos. A presente investigação tem como objectivo geral estudar, numa amostra de pais com crianças ansiosas e de uma perspectiva exploratória e qualitativa, as atribuições parentais acerca das causas da ansiedade das crianças, as estratégias para lidar com essa ansiedade e as implicações para a criança e família. A selecção dos participantes do estudo foi realizada em diferentes etapas. Numa primeira fase, de triagem, 869 crianças responderam em dois momentos ao SCARED-R, um questionário de avaliação de sintomatologia ansiosa. Numa segunda fase, de avaliação diagnóstica, os pais das crianças que apresentaram valores superiores ao percentil 80 em ambos os momentos da triagem foram entrevistados com a versão para pais da ADIS-IV-P (n=78). Posteriormente, alguns destes pais de crianças diagnosticadas com perturbações de ansiedade, seleccionados aleatoriamente, foram também sujeitos a uma entrevista semi-estruturada (n=16), que tinha por objectivo a avaliação das atribuições parentais sobre a ansiedade das crianças. A análise qualitativa dos dados permitiu evidenciar que os pais fazem, na sua maioria, atribuições de causalidade externa à ansiedade dos filhos e consideram que esta é temporária. As estratégias parentais mais frequentes que os pais de crianças ansiosas utilizam para lidar com a ansiedade dos filhos são: o reforço da dependência, estratégias de incentivo ao confronto com os medos e a tranquilização. Quanto à percepção de impacto, o bem-estar parental foi o domínio mais referido pelos pais. As dificuldades em gerir o quotidiano foi a consequência futura mais apontada. Tratando-se de um estudo exploratório e de carácter inovador, os resultados obtidos constituem linhas de orientação para futuras investigações que se debrucem sobre as atribuições parentais acerca da ansiedade.

The high volatile work environment for which high education aim to prepare their graduates demands a high and flexible curricula. Based on the data from the last five years for national and international students enrolled in specific subjects we are able to set up a pilot project aiming to increase the attractiveness of specific subjects and a definition of a journey for the students seeking specific subjects in the Faculty of Pharmacy of University of Lisbon. Data gathered and information drawn from it, serves as a background for the international student journey project. Based on available data and experience drawn from hosting international students including data from their previous high education, languages skills and social cultural differences, alongside time constrains linked to their length of stay the project identified relevant improvement items for the student journey. From 2013 to 2018 there was a remarkable steady increase to 492,31% accompanied by an increase of nationalities. The trend from Portuguese speaking countries is now shifted to central European countries and also Italy and Spain. Students from Bangladesh, Iraq, Syria and China are also present in the recent years. Based on the data analysis perform a pilot project is being drafted to be implemented during the next academic year that with the help of the students involved aims to improve the quality of students journey and experience and the visibility of the Faculty and Portugal. Specific activities already implemented or being implemented throughout the Faculty Campus to improve the quality of the international students’ journey includes: - Identification of staff with a better command of the English language - The website with an increase of better and greater English languages presence - Notices with office hours in Portuguese and English

O quarto número da Revista GAMA percorre, no campo dos Estudos Artísticos, instâncias de memória e de enraizamento, problematizando o futuro através das questões resgatadas, de ontem. Dá-se seguimento ao rumo inicial desta revista, onde artistas escrevem sobre obras de outros artistas, mas agora tem-se uma melhor delimitação e focagem no que respeita ao uso criativo ou acidental da diacronia e suas interligações potenciadoras: o arquivo, a obra recordada, o registo, o projeto, a reativação, a meta-linguagem, a identidade. A Revista GAMA segue um caminho prudente, como o de um alpinista que, ao subir, procura registar na memória os pontos de referência do seu caminho, pontos que lhe possam vir a ser úteis, mais tarde, na descida. Aqueles que sobem, nesta revista, podem ser uns, e os que descem, podem ser outros, de outra geração. Os pontos de referência permanecem, à espera da sua utilidade. Este conjunto de artigos traduz um posicionamento geral de grande atenção aos referentes históricos e técnicos, com uma sensível preocupação pela recuperação e preservação dos objetos e criadores interventivos. Através do olhar dos criadores de hoje, a criatividade mantém-se ativa e interventiva, para ser fonte de recomeços que se anunciam.

Background: Understanding the discrepancy between IgE sensitization and allergic reactions to peanut could facilitate diagnosis and lead to novel means of treating peanut allergy. Objective: To identify differences in IgE and IgG4 binding to peanut peptides between peanut-allergic (PA) and peanut-sensitized but tolerant (PS) children. Methods: PA (n = 56), PS (n = 42) and nonsensitized nonallergic (NA, n = 10) patients were studied. Synthetic overlapping 15-mer peptides of peanut allergens (Ara h 1-11) were spotted onto microarray slides, and patients' samples were tested for IgE and IgG4 binding using immunofluorescence. IgE and IgG4 levels to selected peptides were quantified using ImmunoCAP. Diagnostic model comparisons were performed using likelihood-ratio tests between each specified nominal logistic regression models. Results: Seven peptides on Ara h 1, Ara h 2, and Ara h 3 were bound more by IgE of PA compared to PS patients on the microarray. IgE binding to one peptide on Ara h 5 and IgG4 binding to one Ara h 9 peptide were greater in PS than in PA patients. Using ImmunoCAP, IgE to the Ara h 2 peptides enhanced the diagnostic accuracy of Ara h 2-specific IgE. Ratios of IgG4/IgE to 4 out of the 7 peptides were higher in PS than in PA subjects. Conclusions: Ara h 2 peptide-specific IgE added diagnostic value to Ara h 2-specific IgE. Ability of peptide-specific IgG4 to surmount their IgE counterpart seems to be important in established peanut tolerance.

The introduction of chemical reporter groups into glycan structures through metabolic oligosaccharide engineering (MOE) followed by bio-orthogonal ligation is an important tool to study glycosylation. We show the incorporation of synthetic galactose derivatives that bear terminal alkene groups in hepatic cells, with and without infection by Plasmodium berghei parasites, the causative agent of malaria. Additionally, we demonstrated the contribution of GLUT1 to the transport of these galactose derivatives, and observed a consistent increase in the uptake of these compounds going from naïve to P. berghei-infected cells. Finally, we used MOE to study the interplay between Plasmodium parasites and their mosquito hosts, to reveal a possible transfer of galactose building blocks from the latter to the former. This strategy has the potential to provide new insights into Plasmodium glycobiology as well as for the identification and characterization of key glycan structures for further vaccine development.

Natural killer cell receptors (NKRs) are germline-encoded transmembrane proteins that regulate the activation and homeostasis of NK cells as well as other lymphocytes. For γδ T cells, NKRs play critical roles in discriminating stressed (transformed or infected) cells from their healthy counterparts, as proposed in the "lymphoid stress-surveillance" theory. Whereas the main physiologic role is seemingly fulfilled by natural killer group 2 member D, constitutively expressed by γδ T cells, enhancement of their therapeutic potential may rely on natural cytotoxicity receptors (NCRs), like NKp30 or NKp44, that can be induced selectively on human Vδ1+ T cells. Here, we review the contributions of NCRs, NKG2D, and their multiple ligands, to γδ T cell biology in mouse and human.

O ensaio visa apresentar uma breve introdução no formato de estudo de caso sobre como a imagem do outro enquanto exótico pode variar de sentido e ser alterada ao longo do tempo, e da participação de antropólogos e antropólogas na construção e reformatação deste ideal imagético. Para exemplificação são priorizadas a consulta e a concentração em um caso específico e característico, sendo este orientado pela aproximação à parte do repositório fotográfico que foi organizado a partir do acervo que Sílvio Coelho dos Santos construiu durante as várias décadas de contato que este manteve com os Xokleng do Sul do brasil. A inclusão do material fotográfico é precedida por uma breve introdução ao histórico do contato e da situação dos Xokleng, visando permitir às partes leitoras algum acesso aos eventos prévios que ocorreram.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disease associated with the misfolding and aggregation of alpha-synuclein (aSyn). The molecular underpinnings of PD are still obscure, but nutrition may play an important role in the prevention, onset, and disease progression. Dietary (poly)phenols revert and prevent age-related cognitive decline and neurodegeneration in model systems. However, only limited attempts were made to evaluate the impact of digestion on the bioactivities of (poly)phenols and determine their mechanisms of action. This constitutes a challenge for the development of (poly)phenol-based nutritional therapies. Here, we subjected (poly)phenols from Arbutus unedo to in vitro digestion and tested the products in cell models of PD based on the cytotoxicity of aSyn. The (poly)phenol-digested metabolites from A. unedo leaves (LPDMs) effectively counteracted aSyn and H2O2 toxicity in yeast and human cells, improving viability by reducing aSyn aggregation and inducing its clearance. In addition, LPDMs modulated pathways associated with aSyn toxicity, such as oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, mitochondrial impairment, and SIR2 expression. Overall, LPDMs reduced aSyn toxicity, enhanced the efficiency of ER-associated protein degradation by the proteasome and autophagy, and reduced oxidative stress. In total, our study opens novel avenues for the exploitation of (poly)phenols in nutrition and health.

Israel's West Bank settlements are a central point of contention in the dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Overall, however, their rapid proliferation has been generally understood through the lens of an ideologically centered approach that highlights, specifically, the centrality of the national religious settlers' movement. Against this background, the article focuses on the overlooked reality of large, state-sponsored suburban settlements – and in particular on the role of the Israeli Ministry of Housing in their establishment between the mid-1970s and the early 1990s. Building on contributions in the field of political economy and political geography, we conceive the actions of the Ministry in the occupied West Bank as a result of a broader strategy of spatial restructuring. By considering both economic and political imperatives underlying this strategy, our analysis offers a more comprehensive assessment of the factors behind Israel's settlement policy. Drawing on a broad range of empirical sources, from archival material to in-depth interviews with Israeli planners, we argue that the proliferation of settlements has been largely the outcome of a process of metropolitanization – i.e. of the dynamics of urban development of Israel's main metropolitan centers and the adoption of a new, post-Keynesian policy paradigm based on market-oriented economic development. This process has constituted a major factor for the settlements' growth and, ultimately, in the emergence and naturalization of a new territorial configuration in the area of Israel/Palestine.

Mutations causing aberrant splicing are frequently implicated in human diseases including cancer. Here, we establish a high-throughput screen of randomly mutated minigenes to decode the cis-regulatory landscape that determines alternative splicing of exon 11 in the proto-oncogene MST1R (RON). Mathematical modelling of splicing kinetics enables us to identify more than 1000 mutations affecting RON exon 11 skipping, which corresponds to the pathological isoform RON∆165. Importantly, the effects correlate with RON alternative splicing in cancer patients bearing the same mutations. Moreover, we highlight heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein H (HNRNPH) as a key regulator of RON splicing in healthy tissues and cancer. Using iCLIP and synergy analysis, we pinpoint the functionally most relevant HNRNPH binding sites and demonstrate how cooperative HNRNPH binding facilitates a splicing switch of RON exon 11. Our results thereby offer insights into splicing regulation and the impact of mutations on alternative splicing in cancer.
