THE ROLE OF THE TERTIARY SECTOR OF THE ECONOMY IN THE SOCIAL-SPATIAL INTERACTION IN THE BRAZIL-PARAGUAY BORDER REGION

In the social-spatial interactions that take place in the Brazil-Paraguay border, the trade and services activities play a strong role in terms of integration. In this article we have highlighted the complementarity between Bela Vista (located on the Brazilian side) and Bella Vista Norte (on the Paraguayan side); Mundo Novo (located on the Brazilian side) and Salto Del Guairá (located on the Paraguayan side); Ponta Porã (located on the Brazilian side) and Pedro Juan Caballero (located on the Paraguayan side) border towns, which is mediated by the tertiary sector of economy according to the Lower and Upper Circles of the urban economy concept (as formulated by Milton Santos). We have pointed out the social relations between the frontiersmen who socialize with others despite of the political division mechanism, as well of the border limits that are set by law. We have used data from the Annual Report on Social Information (RAIS, in the acronym in Portuguese) and concluded that trade and service activities play a meaningful role in the generation of new jobs (in several degrees), according to the cities that have been studied, contributing, thus, to the consolidation of local economy, providing people from those places a larger availability of those kinds of services

SOCIO-TERRITORIAL CAPITAL AND DEVELOPMENT INDICATORS: A COMPARATIVE STUDY IN BRAZIL

This paper analyzes, based on data from 2010, the social organization in Brazil, measured by the distribution of Private Foundations and Non-Profit Associations (FASFIL), comparing them with the main socioeconomic indicators. The concept of socio-territorial capital is adopted, based on the notion of social capital (PUTNAM, 1996). This concept values the territorial networking, the bonds of cohesion and cooperation and the territorial rooting, that is, the interaction in different sectors and scales. An analysis is made for the relation between by FASFIL and GDP per capita for the Major Regions and for the Federation Units. The results confirm regional imbalances and interstate imbalances, that is, where there is more FASFIL income is higher. The analysis is also done for the main metropolitan regions and for the metropolises, now involving, in addition to GDP per capita, seven socioeconomic indicators (HDI, Gini index, Life expectancy at birth, Infant mortality, Persons with complete upper level, Percentage of vulnerable to poverty and Formalization of the employed). The results are more expressive than in the scale of the Federation Units, especially at the level of the metropolises, that is, they express more prominently the relation between FASFIL and socio territorial capital.

INTERMUNICIPAL MIGRATORY MOVEMENTS IN THE STATE OF TOCANTINS (BRAZIL) BETWEEN 1991 AND 2010

The state of Tocantins currently consists of 139 municipalities that differ in demographic size, which varies according to natural growth and migration. Process leading to the redistribution of population over the territory. Therefore, the objective is to analyze the inter-municipal migratory movements that took place in Tocantins between 1991 and 2010. The migration data were obtained from the Brazilian Instituto Brasileiro from Geografia and Estatística – IBGE, and extracted using SPSS statistical software. In this way, the inter-state inter-municipal migration matrices were generated and the migratory movements could be analyzed. The Tocantins, because it is a relatively new unit of the federation, has undergone changes that deserve to be considered by the public authorities. It was found that although the municipality of Palmas has a strong attraction, in the eastern mesoregion of which it is a part, many municipalities lose population. On the contrary, in the Western mesoregion, many win. The more intense movements of long distance occurred mainly towards the capital. Already the older municipalities, Araguaína and Gurupi, attract larger volumes of migrants from the surrounding area. In the Eastern mesoregion, many municipalities present negative migratory balances, being exporters; While in the western mesoregion the majority have a positive migratory balance being attractive to the population tocantinense. The movements that have taken place have led to greater population concentration in the new urban center – Palmas – but also in those that already had a differentiated urban structure – such as Araguaína and Gurupi –, which deserves greater attention from the public authorities. Although Palmas was created in a strategic position, the mesoregion that it integrates continues counting on municipalities whose headquarters do not have urban structure and economic dynamism capable of changing the reality of the region, and of their respective municipalities, being the responsibility of the government to think in strategies for avoid the concentration.

SYMBOLIC CONFORMATION SPACE: A STUDY ABOUT RELATIONSHIP HIP-HOP AND RELIGION

The work presented is the result of four years (2012-2016) of the doctoral research at the Federal University of Paraná, in the Graduate Program in Geography. We bring the analysis of symbolic conformation of produced space in the relationship between two cultural worlds, hip-hop and religion. This meeting takes place through the action of young rappers who participated in a meeting known as “Célula da Rima” in the Evangelical Community Sara Nossa Terra, in Curitiba / PR. To understand the symbolic space we chose to approach the “symbolic forms” created by the neokantian philosopher Ernst Cassirer. The survey results show that the spatial perception of these young rappers are more guided on symbolic than on a material basis. When young people talk of town, suburbs, street and Church are not only physical spaces to which they refer, are, above all, imagination buildings, experience and emotions.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE VISION OF MILTON SANTOS

In a world where science and technology are integral parts of development of a country, it is important to understand what are their purposes. It’s not easy to produce criticism on a topic that seems to be incontrovertible to much of the world´s society as to their benefits. Certainly the evolution of science and technology is not accessible to all peoples of the planet. Milton Santos was one of the biggest critics of the development of technology and science separate from society, especially in the third world and particularly in Brazil. This text have chosen part of the thoughts of Milton Santos on this issue with the aim to reinforce the need to rethink the ways of brazilian science.

FORMATIVE PRACTICES AND DIFFERENT STRATEGIES FOR THE TEACHING OF GEOGRAPHY IN THE INITIAL YEARS

This article aims to demonstrate the importance of the formative practices and their different teaching strategies for pedagogical teachers who work in the first segment of Elementary School. Professional training was organized to promote content related to weather, climate and seasons, based on action research and the epistemology of practice. Through the aid of didactic devices such as wooden planetarium and comic books, it was possible to notice the improvement in teaching, materialized by the discussion and elaboration of teaching strategies to be applied to the students of the 3rd, 4th and 5th years of Elementary School. After the training, we conclude that the activities contributed to the strengthening of geographic knowledge in the initial years, allowing the socialization of experiences and knowledge necessary for the qualification of the educational act.

THE INTERNAL CIRCULATION OF GOODS IN MOZAMBICAN TERRITORY: A COUNTRY ON WHEELS

Mozambique is historically known for being a territory turned to its exterior, both because it drains the Southern African inner production (especially its neighbors South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Malawi) and because its economy has long been directed to the exportation of its domestic production. Even though the current “megaprojects” model stills follows this extraverted logic, since the country’s independence in 1975 the Mozambican government has been making an effort to integrate the territory and set up a national economy. When it comes to the circulation of goods, this task depends on road transport by means of numerous roads (mostly unpaved), normative instruments, regulatory institutions and various transport operators (such as companies, autonomous drivers and informal carriers). Thus, based on Milton Santos’ proposal to understand the geographical space through its technical and political normative dimensions, this article attempts at providing an updated framework for the inner circulation of goods in Mozambique.

LATIN AMERICA AT A CROSSROADS: DECLINE OF THE INTEGRATION PROJECT?

We consider Latin America as a group of national territories in cooperation and conflict relations in constant reformulation; territories used by agents with different strength and power that express a multiplicity of interests and contradictions. From this assumption, we analyze the new elements of the political-economic conjuncture since the 2000s as well as the new contents of Latin American institutions’ discourse and orientation. In pointing out the different integration initiatives drew up in a period of one and half decade, we observe that, while on the basis of dissents and perspectives often opposite, mainly the convergence of a sovereign regional integration predominates. Nevertheless, because of recent changes of course happened in countries like Argentina and Brazil, we reflect on the perspectives of this integration and question whether it is about its decline.

SPATIAL JUSTICE AND COUNTIES IN THE STATE OF BAHIA

The objective of this article is to analyze the relationship between space and justice, taking as reference the counties of the new municipalities of Bahia created in the 1980s. Considering that space is form/content, reflex and condition for (in)justice, it is concluded that the organization and functionality of the counties, characterized by juxtaposition and superposition, are more feasible to achieve spatial justice because it allows better and easier access to legal services by citizens.

TEACHING GEODIVERSITY FROM DIDACTIC GAMES

The education and the divulgation of the geosciences are poorly disseminated, not only in the educational range, but also for the society in general. Among the geosciences, there is the geodiversity, which had its concept introduced in the 90’s decade and has been growing worldwide ever since; however, unlike the biodiversity that is broadly disclosed for all society, the geodiversity is unknown for a large percentage of the population, even though such knowledge is very necessary for the understanding of the evolution and dynamic processes of the Earth. Bringing environmental education into the geodiversity divulgation might make the abiotic aspects, which are often forgotten, stand out. This work aims to introduce geodiversity themes in the schoolroom through a board game, illustrating the geodiversity elements (rocks, minerals, fossils, land forms, soils) and some places with geotouristic potencial and better visibility in the State of Paraíba, such as Vale dos Dinossauros (Dinosaur Valley), Lajedo de Pai Mateus, Pedra da Boca, Pedra do Ingá and the Cabo Branco cliffs, as well as verify if the methodology applied appears to be an efficient tool of learning. It is expected to contribute, for the teaching-learning process, in a fun and pleasant way, awakening the curiosity and interest to learn about geodiversity and geosciences. In order to obtain the data used in the search, a visit to the Municipal School Antonia Luna Lisboa, located in the county of Rio Tinto-PB, took place, in which the aforementioned exercises where put into practice. To validate the learning improvement achieved, an analysis through tests was held, where a pretest and an after test to assess the knowledge of the student were applied, to ascertain if the methodology contributed significantly as a tool of education of the geodiversity. The methodology was well-accepted by the students, and it was verified that the answers of the after test were satisfactory. Through the review of the results, it was found that new pedagogical alternatives are necessary for the motivation and learning of the students. Games can and must be used as a pedagogical resource, in a way that the students learn while playing; more interactive classes using slides with images also contribute for the teaching-learning of the students.

THE PRECIPITATION CAPITAL LEVEL METHODOLOGY ENFORCED TO DAILY EXTREME EVENT STUDIES IN CRATO, FORTALEZA AND SOBRAL CITY IN BRAZIL

In Brazil, capital extreme events of precipitation are often broadcasted by press due to their big exploder force of environmental impacts into society. This work has the goal of identify and assess the daily capital extreme events of rain from the application of the stastistic methodology of precipitation capital levels in the cearence cities of Crato, Fortaleza and Sobral (highly urbanized and located into different geo-environmental contexts) facing factors and different situations which hinder the identification of an event as an extreme event. From January of 1980 to july of 2017 has been identified events of huge intensity, connected atmospheric systems and related impacts. Most of these events has occurred between february and may, usually connected to the intertropical convergence zone – ICZ. Among the registered impacts stand out floodings, homeless, injured people and dead ones. Even if these situations occur, planning and suitable management may contribute to implementation of adaptation and prevention strategies.

BETWEEN SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY: THE MULTIPLE MEANINGS OF FIELDWORK AS A DIDACTIC MEDIATION

In this article, we discuss the importance of fieldwork in the development of teaching-learning processes in geography in basic education and in higher education. For this, we analyze two experiments, focusing on the analysis of the mediation performed by the field notebooks in this process. The first one refers to the work done with classes of Elementary and Middle School in the School of Application of the School of Education of USP. The second one deals with fieldwork carried out in the discipline of Regional Geography of Brazil I - Sul, of the Department of Geography of USP. The analysis was built from the follow-up of the different stages of elaboration and execution of the field works, discussing and problematizing the senses of the field notebooks in each of them. At the end of the research, it was possible to perceive the importance of the field notebook in the analyzed works, since, constructed in a collective and collaborative way, they reinforce the interdisciplinary character of knowledge and the educational process. Moreover, in the experience developed in higher education, it was possible to verify the importance of future teachers to appropriate this methodology so that they can defend it, both politically and epistemologically, in basic education.

DEFORESTATION OF CARNAUBA (Copernicia prunifera (Mill.) H.E. Moore) IN CAMPO MAIOR - PI

This study investigates the areas of carnauba palm forest that were removed in the municipality of Campo Maior, checking the progress and change in vegetation coverage, rainfall rates, the composition of GDP in the sectors of the economy (primary, secondary and tertiary), population density and the rate of urbanization. To this end, there were used images available in the Embrapa site (MODIS / NDVI) from the period of 2002 to 2016. Data on GDP, population density and urbanization rate were obtained from the IBGE site. In addition, there were conducted surveys on-site in areas of carnauba palm forest and informal talks with representatives of local government. It was concluded that there was suppression of carnaubas to implementation of real estate projects in the urban area, consistent with the economic and demographic growth of the municipality. The images of NDVI of 2005 and 2016 reflected this modifications.
